Hello folks! Just a quickie to alert you to the forthcoming Please Please You fun we have planned in York.
At The Basement...........
Firstly, Friday night we have a great folk/country/blues show. Time Lag Recording artists Elephant Micah is headlining with his ace lo-fi country-folk songs. He was the recent tour support for Jason Molina which gives you an idea of his style. Last record was described by The Wire as "A beautiful slice of narcoleptic folk that captures the lugubrious nothing-to-do feel of late summer days as well as the slow motion dance of dust in a ray of sunlight." Yup.
Elephant Micah, George Fell, Dallas Boner, The Wayfaring Strangers + Adam Rogowski. Fri. 29th Aug. 8pm, £5.
Also on sale now:
Everyone To The Anderson + Lebanons. Tues. 2nd Sept. 8pm, £5. (Quality post hardcore from Brighton/Tunbridge Wells!)
Jonquil, This Town Needs Guns + Defcon DJ's. Fri. 19th Sept. 8pm, £5adv.
This Sunday night at basement, apollo 15 presents the amazing....
UNDERGROUND RAILROAD
with support from Honeytone Cody and The Borderline
£5/£4 flyer/NUS; doors 8pm
13 -17 Coney street, City Screen, York.
Formed five years ago in Paris, Underground Railroad released their debut album ‘Twisted Trees’ on One Little Indian in the summer of last year – a ferocious squall of a record crystallising the band’s love for post-punk and New York’s No Wave scene, it won them a passionate following through its wholly uncompromising nature.
Drummer Raphael Mura, guitarist Marion Andrau (who both take lead vocal duties) and bassist/backing vocalist JB Ganivet return in the latter half of 2008 with ‘Sticks and Stones’, a new album that smoothes over the jagged edges of their debut, imbuing upon them a strong melodic drive, without losing a trace of the band’s trademark integrity.
Recorded in Seattle at the dawn of 2008 with renowned producer John Goodmanson at its helm (Death Cab For Cutie, Blood Brothers, Sleater Kinney and Blonde Redhead), it sees Underground Railroad gain maturity without sacrificing their angular, noisy leanings.
A spectacular live show is long part of the band’s appeal, Mura’s presence behind the drum kit magisterial and Andrau’s vocals captivating. Couple this with a strong desire to road-test their new material, and 2008 looks likely to grant Underground Railroad a whole new audience.
Hello folks, just a little spam for ya. Thing's are pretty hectic at Please Please You this month as you can see!
Wed. July 2nd. David Karsten Daniels, Burial In The Sky + Boss Caine, The Basement, York, 8pm. £5.
DKD's laest album Fear Of Flying was released by Fat Cat in April and it's bloody marvelous! Look:
"The delirious oboe chorus on ’A Myoclonic Jerk’, the following scuzz-bomb of a guitar attack, the honking horn section on ’That Knot Unties?’, the sliding escalation and sudden stop of ’In My Child Mind You Were A Lion’… it’s all indicative of a sublime musical mind." 9 out of 10. Drowned in Sound
"...a very serious and brave LP, full of grand pronouncements and soaring arrangements." Stool Pigeon
Sat. July 5th. Her Name Is Calla, Glissando + Oh Wow, Meow!, The Basement, York, 8pm. £5.
Tues. July 22nd. Ballboy, Les Cox Sportifs + Over The Atlantic, The Basement, York, 8pm. £5adv.
Also, I'm very excited to announce a special PPY party at The Duchess in York. Canadian psych, country, garage, surf (!?) outfit The Sadies will be performing one of eight UK shows in October. An exceptional live band that played the third ever PPY show in 2006 we are delighted to have them back.
Sat. 25th Oct. The Sadies + The Federals, The Duchess, York, 7.30pm. £10adv.
AWESOME COLOR - this Thursday - but you already know about this one. I bet my David Hasslehoff-signed speedos on this gig being the one to make you scream....
Yet there be more....
Wednesday 25th June, 8pm, £5/£4 flyer/NUS
Apollo 15 & Giddy Equations presents Lady Fortune + Just Handshakes + The Locals + You Are The Proles
In "The Prince", Machiavelli says Lady Fortune only rules one half of a mans fate, the other half being his own will. By the end of the show I'd bet all will. With art-rock and indie-punk bases all covered by this hugely talented band that takes influence from The Strokes via Belle and Sebastian they quickly began support slots with the likes of The Pigeon Detectives, The Young Knives and The Paddingtons.
Thursday 26th June, 8pm, £5/£4 flyer/ NUS
Apollo 15 presents Mugstar + Celebrity Love Crisis + Thrive + Jono
Sea Record’s Mugstar are the sound of 10,000 suns exploding, pulsing with repetitive beauty, pounding like a supersonic mantra. They set sail for the sun in 2002 and have completed numerous voyages with the likes of Mogwai, Melt Banana, Onieda, Acid Mothers Temple and Part Chimp. The band recorded one of the last sessions for the late great John Peel and featured in his festive 50.
Celebrity Love Crisis have emerged from the ashes of National Grid HVRP to produce progtastic metallic juicy riff filled scientifantastic bon bombs.
Then come watch these crazy loons reek havoc in The Basement on Wednesday Jun 18th. Double keyboard and double drumer assault that defies belief. Drowned In Sound faves, one of few northern dates, only a fiver!
The mighty Fist Full Of Yen and Steve Watson in support.
This gig is gonna be one of the highlights of the year......
Saturday 7 June, 8.00 - Apollo 15 presents...
ROMI MAYES
with support from Boss Caine + Ellen & The Escapades + Mark Wynn + Andrew Neville
This experienced and talented Canadian singer-songwriter has shared stages with the likes of Ricky Skaggs, Billy Joe Shaver, Joe Ely, Fred Eaglesmith, Sue Foley, Jimmy Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock, Gurf Morlix, Martha Wainwright and Hayes Carll. "This is the sort of sound you’d want to hear pouring out of roadhouses as you drive up expecting to get drunk and maybe fall in love." - Americana UK Magazine
Tickets: £7/£5 flyer/NUS (print off a flyer or pick one up from basement)
Guilt Pursuit + Honeytone Cody + The Carlyle Group
Guilt Pusuit incorporate lots of varied influences, from Sonic Youth to Nick Cave. Their new song, however, sounds quite like an Arabian disco, so that shows what they're about really! Expect a fine collision of the raw and the cooked from Leeds’ hottest new band.
Tickets: £5/£4 flyer/NUS
Thursday 19 June, 8.00
Apollo 15 & Soup present…..
Awesome Color + That Fucking Tank
Probably the best rockin’ line-up of the year! Michegan’s Awesome Color are a stompin’ drone-rock day-glo answer to the Stooges. Leeds 2-piece That Fucking Tank blast out a twisted take on Math rock stylings to formidable effect.
Hello folks. Just a bit of spam to alert you to three wicked shows we've got coming up in the next fortnight. Hope you see something you fancy.
Silje Nes, Madam + Dallas Boner. Wed. May 21st, 8pm, £5. Stunning Norwegian multi-instrumentalist on a short tour of the UK. Last years ‘Ames Room’ album on Fat Cat is filled by fractured beats, whispy melancholy and gorgeous melody. Madam is one Sukie Smith, herself possessing a voice capable of melting even the most stoney of hearts. Her Reveal debut caused the entire British music press to fight over adjectives in order to describe the sheer beauty of her music and singing. So we won’t try any more! Safe to say this is an absolute must see (hear!) and a bargain too.
The Lodger, Slow Down Tallahassee + The ABC Club. Wed. May 28th, 8pm, £5.
Album number two by this great Leeds band is about to hit the shelves. The Lodger marry indie pop with great songwriting and are without doubt one of the finest pop bands in the area. Slow Down Tallahassee also have an album about to arrive on Thee SPC. Kinda sixties girl group sounds mixed with edgy guitars and a heavy dose of charm. They rarely play outside Sheffield so this is a right treat. Formally The Debuts, The ABC Club round things off very nicely.
Young Republic, Boss Caine + Karl Culley. Fri. May 30th, 8pm, £6adv.
Nashville's Young Republic are on their first full UK tour and we're dead lucky to have them. They have had a pile of praise for their debut album, played Glastonbury and been raved about at Rough Trade (two singles of the week and album of the week!). Bit of press:
Word Magazine: “This Debut achieves plenty, seamlessly skipping from folk introspection and lonesome country balladry to high voltage power-pop sparkiness with a glitteringly perfect cohesion.”
Q: “...the sense of potential is tantalising.”
Rough Trade: “12 Slices of American Indie Heaven”
Guardian: “His [Julian Saporiti] voice fizzles with Jonathan Richman’s wrynes
Hi folks. The bombardment begins! We have five shows this month, the first of which is mighty exciting!
Supporting his new Asthmatic Kitty LP ’In The Vines’ Raymond Raposa stops by for one of only six UK shows. His wonderful songwriting is awash with trippy electronics and lazy country licks. Twisted country Grandaddy possibly? I dunno, bloody good though! Assisting on the album are a wealth of talented musicians including members of the wonderful Phosphorescent, Jana Hunter and Sufjan Stevens.
Supports are great too.
York ain't so far away! 10 minutes from the station.
Please Please You presents Castanets, Fishing Partners + Red Trees. The Basement, York, Thurs. 8th May, 8pm. £6adv.
Apollo 15 presents Copy Haho + Captains Of Industry + I’m Sorry Callfield
Scotland’s new post-punk heroes. Copy Haho deliver catchy riffs and understated melodies as championed by Steve Lamaq. A recent review of their 7 inch ‘Spitfires’ reads thus…. “It's a rare thing indeed for a song from a review CD by a band I've never heard of to make it on to my daily bus ride favourite songs playlist and much much rarer for both songs to go on the playlist and still be there two months later. Ergo, Copy Haho are something special.” (Diskant) Need you know more?
Hey y'all, congrats on the album and everything. How's Liverpool? I'm no longer at Electrical as of January...I began interning at Gravity Studios here in Chicago and now I'm their studio manager so it's all good. Keep me posted!
ooh yes, please have a glasgow launch! that would be ace. great cover too by the way. how exciting! You must be chuffed. Can't wait to have it playing on Mark's turntable! cx
