Deli Magazine's CD OF THE MONTH, November 21, 2008 Archways' first full-length album, "Lest We Forget" has all the musical intricacy of a Kevin Shields project mixed with an alluring pop Morrissey-like sensibility. The album plays pleasantly discordant, with it's heavy emphasis on thickly dark bass lines that open up the songs with a caliginous tone. Ray Argyle's softly sweet tenor adds a contrasting complexity to t he pulsating undertones of the music holding strong beneath Argyle's voice. A lonely voice calls out "All messed up after the party/ Not fall down drunk, but falling apart/ I should be happy " on one of the album's haunting highlights, "Jinx" that recalls the austere honesty of Elliot Smith with a darker foundation. Relatively new to the L.A. music scene, their first album is an impressively mature amalgamation of classic sounds and throbbing beats which foretells a rich exploration of musical landscapes for a band so young. With such an impressively haunting first album, the Archways prove themselves as one of the must-watch bands in the city of angels. -Chris Castanon, The Deli Magazine Los Angeles
"To proclaim that a band from L.A. “came out of nowhere” may seem a bit farfetched, but amidst little press or fanfare, indie rock newcomers Archways burst onto the music landscape with a mighty full-length debut in Lest We Forget. Led by guitarist Chris Kordash and featuring a cast of SoCal musicians, Archways channel the best of the Interpol post-punk revival and fuse it seamlessly with Coldplay’s pop melodies and, surprisingly, touches of Tool’s technical complexity." -Julia Cooper, West Coast Performer Magazine
Archways was formed by Chris Kordash and Ray Argyle during the late summer of 2006 in Los Angeles. Discovering the compatibility of Ray’s melodic vocal style with Chris’ artful guitar work, the two set out with the ambitious task of collaborating on material which used classic progressions and pop-sensible melodies but combined them with rhythmic structures that were both driving and nuanced with shifting time signatures. After over a year of writing and recording at various Southern Californian studios, Archways finally completed their debut Album Lest We Forget. The album is 14 beautifully crafted songs that flow seamlessly with the cinematic sense of a visionary soundtrack. Dark and passionate, tracks like "New Low" and "Don't Be a Stranger" bring to mind the vocal crooning of artists like Morrissey and Jeff Buckley while others such as "Modern Myth" and "Jinx" have an undercurrent of complexity to the arrangements that is reminiscent of Radiohead. Layering the craft of the open hearted songwriter with technical sophistication, Archways has managed to combine elements of seemingly contradictory musical movements into its own original voice.
Argyle and Kordash are now working on an EP which should be completed in the summer of 2009. Look for Archways songs in upcoming Independent Films such as The Outside and the surfing documentary Gabriel Villaran: Out of My Head. Much more to come!
