Influences
I LOVE old recordings and all things charming like that. Performing live and watching live performances is my church/temple/mosque. Growing up, I listened to; the great songwriters of the world which are too many to list, Moroccan jams, Old time Country like Patsy Cline and Bob Wills, Gershwin, Vaudeville, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin, Fats Domino, Otis Redding, James Brown, Fleetwood Mac, Show Tunes (don't hate), The Indigo Girls, The Andrews Sisters, Bett Midler, TLC, Brandy, Selena, Nirvana, Beck, The Flaming Lips etc. The Romeo and Juliet Soundtrack introduced me to the world outside top 40 and my family's favorites... As far as what's influencing me now'a days; Of Montreal, Dead Man's Bones, Lykke Li, Devendra Banhart, M.I.A, RADIOHEAD, Fleet Foxes, Jens Lekman, The Black Keys, The Dixie Chicks (She was right.), Diana Ross, Doris Day, Marilyn Monroe (I love her singing voice. I got a vinyl of the songs she did for movies and she sounds just as voluptuous as she looked. I have a total straight-girl-crush on Marilyn Monroe), Journey, Sufjan Stevens, Brent Kyle's This Week in Music, Music Blogs... Random influences; anything that can be found in an antique shop, when the wind whistles in tune with some music I'm listening to, my record player, Oklahoma and my family there; especially my brothers and sisters, weather, animals- owls, hummginbirds, dear, harmless spiders and you. :)
Audra Mae is a natural. Once the Oklahoma native opens her mouth and lets loose with that voice, pure and strong, with a hint of country twang and a twinkle of good humor, you realize this is what she’s meant to do; Stand in front of an audience and entertain, not just with her singing, but a distinctive songwriting voice, one that’s capable of relating fully developed characters and stories.
