Who?
AYUP are a network of people involved in animation based in Yorkshire and the Humber. We are run by animation people, for animation people, and aim to promote and encourage people in the region, working in all disciplines of animation.
Animation Lab?
Animation Lab is a space for animators, based in Yorkshire and The Humber to make films, experiment and expand their skills - and share this process with the general public.
AYUP's Animation Lab is running in the former AIR (Animator in Residence) Booth at the National Media Museum in Bradford. In 2007 Channel 4 pulled funding from the AIR scheme, and in May 2008 AYUP took over the space and are now using it to promote local talent.
Where is it?
It is situated inside the Animation Gallery on the 5th floor of The National Media Museum Bradford and has a large window on the outside wall for people to observe what is going on.
Organising the booth are:
Andy 'Hexjibber' Sykes. Flash Animator, Illustrator and Self Published Author, based in Leeds.
and Jamie Evans, Stop Motion Animator and Film Maker, based in Dewsbury.
I Want To Do A Residency. What Do I Have To Do?
You can apply to do one of two things in the booth:
1 MINUTE A MONTH SCHEME
Conceive and create a one minute film in the booth in one month or less. The film can be any theme/type, using any animation method available in the booth. It just has to be 1 minute in length. These films will then be compiled into a showreel and submitted to festivals.
1 WEEK - 1 MONTH EXPERIMENTAL RESIDENCY
If you don't want to create a film for the 1 MINUTE A MONTH SCHEME, then you can apply to spend up to a month in the booth to do your own project. This could be experimenting, or making a short film of more than one minute, or just learning to use the equipment.
Choose one of the above options and submit a proposal in 500 words or less, with accompanying storyboards/concept drawings/animatics to Andy Sykes, with your contact details.
Over the coming months a series of animators from across the region, from students, graduates and professionals, from various disciplines will be taking up residence in the AYUP Animation Lab.
SCHEDULE as 08.11.2008 Thurs 13th Nov - Premiere of all 4 Anim Lab Films @ The Bradford Animation Festival, TV Heaven in The National Media Museum.
Lab Co-ordinators Andy Sykes and Jamie Evans will be around for the duration of the festival if you want to drop by the Anim Lab.
"DJ Monkey …soul-stirring, excitingly edgy music…just disturbing (read ‘mind-f**king’) enough to demand attention. There is a whole spice rack of auditory flavors here, served up like fractured poetry on a collection of intensely listenable Hallmark cards from Hell." Bill Margold, Cinema Seen, L.A. X..Press
