About me:
Hello All.... Each year, the Fort Smith Police Department is proud to participate in the Law Enforcement Torch run to benefit Special Olympics Arkansas. On May 19th, members of several police departments will carry the "flame of hope" from Greenwood through Fort Smith, Van Buren, Alma and several other towns along Highway 64 to Clarksville, AR. The Torch Run raises awareness for Special Olympics and gives us, police officers, a chance to interact with the citizens of our community in a very positive way. One of the largest fund raisers of the law Enforcement Torch Run is the Annual Polar Bear Plunge! Each year, members of the Fort Smith Police Department, along with members of the Van Buren Police Department gather for the Polar Bear Plunge at World Class Fitness. The 2009 Polar Bear Plunge raised right at $30,000.00, a new record for the Fort Smith/Van Buren plunge. This plunge also involved members of the University of Arkansas Fort Smith Police Department as well as several members of the community. Over 100 persons took the plunge in the frigid waters of the World Class Fitness swimming pool, all to raise money for our local Special Olympics athletes. Anyone who would like to participate in the Law Enforcement Torch Run or the Polar Bear Plunge is encouraged to contact Captain Jarrard Copeland with the Fort Smith Police Department at 479-709-5009.
Who I'd like to meet:
Use of the name "Olympics" and the historic ideals it represents is both high in honor and a weighty responsibility. Special Olympics must preserve the "Olympic" quality of its games or lose the right to use the reverred designation.
The practice of grouping athletes for competition based upon their abilities is fundamental and critical to the principles of the Special Olympics program. This practice requires that competition divisions be structured such as all athletes shall have a reasonable chance to win (i.e. all divisions shall be even).
In Special Olympics the athlete is all-important. Developing the physical, social, psychological, intellectural and spiritual qualities of the participants underlies everything that is done in the Special Olympic program.
It is not enough to merely introduce many different sports to Special Olympics athletes. it is critical that parents and coaches make every possible effort to encouraage and provide Special Olympics athletes with opportunities to reach their highest level of ability in a particular sport. This is fundamental to the principle that the athlete is all-important in Special Olympics. Experiencing new and higher levels of athletic achievement requires a commitment from parents, coaches and athletes. This commitment enhances the sense of reward athletes receive from participating in Special Olympis.
Special Olympic Games should always be high quality events. Special Olympics athletes should have reason to conclude that persons who respect their athletic achievements and their humanity are treating them individually in a truly Olympic manner.
