In 1999, Barefoot Theatre Company was founded by a group of multicultural artists in order to produce stimulating and thought provoking theatre for the public. Since then, we have stood by the principles of ensemble collaboration and artistic risks to develop and foster plays, new and existing, with a broad range of social relevance, striving to keep the vitality of American Theatre alive and vibrant. By creating a visceral, more provocative manner of storytelling through our ensemble commitment, we provide emerging artists with the opportunity to explore and take artistic risks while engaging audiences of all ages.
Since its inception, the Barefoot Theatre Company has successfully produced over thirty productions including original works, readings, as well as contemporary and classical plays.
Barefoot Theatre Company is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization. All donations are tax deductable.
"I work with young theatre-troupes around the globe, and Barefoot
Theatre Company is one of my favorites, at the very top of my list,
along with Cie Hercub in France and Teatro Plastico in Portugal.
Barefoot Theatre Company is a serious, talented, meticulous,
thoroughly professional troupe, reflecting the sort of ethnic mix that
makes NYC such a vibrant, delicious city. If you want to see
authentic NYC theatre, skip Broadway...hop to Barefoot Theatre
Company."
- World renowned playwright, Israel Horovitz
"I had the pleasure and privilege of working with the Barefoot
Theatre Company in 2007 on Nine Short Plays by Israel Horovitz. It was a totally professional production, skillfully mounted, and exemplified what true theatre is about -- the bringing together of serious and committed actors to make challenging and innovative theatre. It is the life's blood of the future of our theatre. "
- Lynn Cohen (Speilberg's Munich, Sex and the City,
Vanya on 42nd St.)
"One night in 2007,, I went to see a production, in an unprepossessing little
theatre space in New York, of a stage version of the great film Dog
Day Afternoon. I went to it because a very fine actress I know,
Amanda Plant, was in it. Apart from the prospect of watching Amanda work, however, I held little hope for the experience. Dog Day Afternoon is of course one of the great movies, made by a master at one of the many peaks of his powers, and I wondered what a theatrical version of the story could possibly add to it, or indeed not subtract from it substantially. Then I saw the Barefoot Theatre production. I think it's the most exciting theatre I saw in the year of 2007, and one of the most exciting that I've seen in several years. The immediacy of it, and the awareness of how the theatre can uniquely create that immediacy, the raw and disciplined power of the acting, the sheer inventiveness of the staging, and the sense of how that inventiveness can arise from the most limited circumstances, in a way even because of those circumstances, was thrilling. And will be
thrilling again when the show is put before us again. And I suspect
will be thrilling in the future productions of this remarkable
company. I feel refreshed just thinking about it. I wish them well,
because to wish them well is to wish us all well."
– Austin Pendleton (My Cousin Vinny, Catch-22, HBO's OZ)
"I have great respect and affection for The Barefoot Theatre Company, which is committed to producing theatre that explores the humancharacter and condition in truthful, complex ways, and which creates the work with enormous respect for the artists and the working process."
- Award winning playwright Mary Gallagher
"…of all the companies I've worked for in the Showcase arena, Barefoot is the one I most respect, most enjoyed working with, and most expect to see as a full-throttle professional, Off-and-On-Broadway company in the future."
– Anna Chlumsky (Company Member, My Girl, 30 Rock)

You saw through me Saw that frightened little kid in me You said, Don't try to be somebody else Just believe and be myself Be me.
You set me free Said, Look inside your heart and see And my feelings came off of the shelf In spite of myself I am me
I'm tears and laughter Fears and rage I'm many people on the stage But they're all a part of me
Me...it happened to me I put my star up in the sky For the world to see My dreams have all come alive I'm bursting with pride I can't believe What's happened to me
The kid in me came out to play I did it all in my own way In front of the crowd I'm taking a bow Look! On the marquee
