The year was 2005. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger became the 265th Vatican Pope, Liverpool won the UEFA Champions League for the fifth time, and a new band arose in Carcavelos, Portugal (rad place known for its beaches, sick surf spots and mellow lifestyle).
B!RD was born through unifying members of two other bands called “Whiskys” and “Fasten”. The bands were dying of natural causes, resulting from member circumstances; the need to search for “real” employment, marital obligations and put simply, boredom!
Zé and Miguel (Whiskys vocals and guitar) weren’t prepared to give up the mad life of leisure, typical of being a punk/ska/reggae musician, and began thinking up ways to further postpone their adulthood. At the same time, Cesco and Stussy (Fasten guitar and drums) were on standby, awaiting bass player David’s return from Poland so they could resume playing. Zé, Miguel, Cesco and Stussy started jamming together and got to know each other better, and by the time David arrived, had already put together a bunch of songs, fusing stuff from prior bands and of course giving life to the new sound of B!RD.
The name B!RD came from an expression a girl once used to describe the five incredibly goofy, sloppy, happy, drunk yet very attractive young men. The five guys project similar musical influences, some more punk, and others more ska, but there is one more dominant element for all, the common reference to the band Sublime. B!RD wrote their songs in that “Californian surf beach party” style like their common influences and applied them in similar environments, half way across the globe. Their fast-hard and melodic riffs of their punk songs blended naturally with the quick energetic ska they played, making their growing base of fans compare their music to the likes of Mad Caddies, Slightly Stoopid and Catch 22.
After playing live for the first time in Algarve in September of 2005, the performance requests began to pour in, and B!RD have since played live at over 40 different events at clubs and large festivals all over Portugal, including the Surf Fest 2007. They have shared the stage with big names like Mad Caddies, Gentleman and The Slackers, and are known for rocking their hearts, guts and livers out, doing what they enjoy most, playing live for the people who dig their music.
With their debut album due out in September this year, the support for B!RD is growing in Europe, and their wings are spreading fast in preparation to fly around the world and come rock your city too.
