Black Sesame is vocalist, violinist, songwriter and ex-mathematician, Melissa Cox.
Melissa first began writing songs while she was supposed to be writing her PhD thesis; her supervisor pretended not to notice. She continued to write songs after she had (finally) finished her thesis and begun studying jazz performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music; her composition teacher nodded approvingly. So the music drowned out the maths, and now, as Black Sesame, Melissa has completed her debut album, brink, which will be released through Green Media in August 2007.
brink paints landscapes of many colours. The jazz influence is present but understated; probably inevitable considering Melissa has performed internationally as a jazz artist (most recently in Japan and China). But as Black Sesame, it’s a darker palette that colours her writing, a palette compiled across years of winters in different cities: stark Edinburgh blue, inner-west Sydney grey, pulsating Bristol black...
Outside Black Sesame, violinist-Melissa has performed and recorded with Jenny Morris (NZ), Afro Moses O’Jah (Ghana), Gervais Koffi and the African Diaspora (Cote d’Ivoire) and Dominique Fraissard (Australia), with whom she has supported Australian bands such as The Waifs and John Butler Trio.
Hello darling...Still in London ? How are you?..Things are a bit better for me here.Hope I'll see you soon, let me know when you're back in PAris...Take care, bye!
Hi Melissa! Thanks for the request - 'twas great to meet you on the weekend! We had way too much fun that night! ;-) We're back in Paris and playing at Le Cleub on Saturday night - hope you can make it :-) Either way, see you soon! cheers, N&N
Hi Mellisa, 'Live at the Savoy' is coming along quite nicely - check out www. conspire. com. au and let us know what date suits. Even though we've only got 2 in so far it's going to fill up fast! Just had the Blue Mountains Music Festival over the weekend and heaps of our friends are well interested!
Congratulations on the radio play! Sounds like things are going well.
We are hoping you can help us....
The Falls have been short listed for a chance to perform at the "Sound Of Music Festival" alongside bands such as 1990's, The Devoted Few, Belles Will Ring and the Seabellies.
In order to make it on the festival they are holding a show at the Spectrum in a few weeks to decide the final band - but to get on the gig at spectrum we need as many people to send a message to the festival's myspace page. So please help us by dropping them a message.
2. Send them a message with THE FALLS as the SUBJECT, saying that you "think The Falls should play at the Spectrum and open the Sound of Music Festival!"
That is all.... so easy!
Thanks for your help, Simon + Melinda + Dave + Mal + Pat + Gerard The Falls
