March 2008. A Finnish woman emerges from a store in Berlin-Mitte and flings her arms
around Demba Nabe, explaining "This is the guy who sings "Louder"! Wow, I can't
believe it! " to her friend. Only two years ago Demba had silently hoped that his first solo
effort would win him fans in all countries and all strata of societies - now he has to deal
with a wish come true.
The members of the band Seeed are comfortably seated
inside the bands bus. They have just heard a rough version of Boundzounds first
record, nobody says a word. They nod, bounce, raise the corners of their mouths and
then nod some more. They had not expected such an abundance of beautiful pop
music. Its October 2006 and Seeed are on their way from somewhere to somewhere
else.
As a boy he wanted to become a stuntman. Superman, really, but stuntman sort of felt
like the next best thing, for the moment. In early 2007 the vocalist Demba Nabe thinks
back to 1977, to his childhood, his dreams. Groans and screams are heard from above.
Boundzounds rehearsal room is located below a school for stuntmen.
In a small room somewhere deep in Neukšlln a bald, black woman sings and sings and
sings. The hot summer of 2006 is with her, there, in the attic, like a fat, invisible
companion. Just shortly before, the woman - Skin - had met Demba and agreed to
perform on the first record of his Boundzound-project. Moses Schneider and demba record her
vocals at Dembas home.
Boundzound have their first gig in the early summer of 2007. After years of enjoying the
sound of the big stages and the perfect organisation that came with Seeed, Demba
Nabe calls this moment a refreshing slap in the face. His new band performs together
with him, they connect to their audience, the audience loves them, makes the
experience special. Soon afterwards, the spark moves on to festivals, is transmitted via
radio and television.
Mail from Montana Beats. New Beats by Mr. Beats. The TV is on, a black-and-whitemovie,
silent. The laptop plays songs by Charlie Parker, Lauryn Hill, Jay-Z, Otis
Redding, Debussy and Prince. Demba adds a statement to the beats. A melody that
talks about Today ,yesterday and tomorrow, later he takes up the subjects of a "U Turn" and a
"Bang". Montana Beats is new. Jan and Charles, Monk and Vincent are second timers,
now in 2008 during the creation of the second record under the name of Boundzound.
Demba Nabe relaxes on his couch, with a steaming cup of coffee with cinnamon in a
blue-and-white cup in front of him. July 2008 offers Berlin, just as May and June did,
picture-perfect weather. One has to work on songs until they are done, stresses
Demba Nabe... "There is a rather disturbing tendency these days, people lack the will to
excellence. You dont get quality anymore. Instead, you get movies for tiny screens,
songs for your telephone, for your MP3-player, for those tiny speakers. I prefer the sonic
experience of a concert hall." - "The world is a big place. It is very important to realize
what surrounds one, the way the cards are dealt and what game is played when -
Setlist!"
Then he returns to his paintings. He paints the musical pictures for the second
Boundzound offering.
