BRIAN RITCHEY'S GARAGE ROCK IS REAL:
The Nashville songwriter's new album is full of genuine, sloppy glory.
With the clattering introduction of "Which Way is Hell?" the opening statement on Nashville singer-songwriter Brian Ritchey's new album, you're quickly reminded of how rowdy bar rock is supposed to sound.
The groove is filthy and unprepared, and Ritchey barks with inspired rage — qualities conspicuously absent in the postured, predictable shimmying of the pseudo-garage acts of today (or, really, five years ago).
Maybe he's able to encapsulate that much spitfire in a single tune because it's a rare occurrence. The majority of Painter is slow, steady and melodically engrossing, though the clearer delivery makes Ritchey's influences all the more transparent. You could probably convince nine out of 10 Wilco fans that it's Jeff Tweedy singing at the top of poppy swinger "Sleeping on Gold," as Ritchey nails his shaky tone with uncanny similarity.
He skips Tweedy's abstract, stream-of-conscious lyric sense, though, in favor of pretense-free lines and mission statements. "If I were a doctor/ I'd help all my friends/ And help everyone who goes untreated./ If I were a poet/ or a golden millionaire/ I'd leave all my money to charity," he proclaims on the title track.
Some folks might roll their eyes at lines like these, but it's hard not to admire the starkness with which Ritchey lays out his vision, however familiar it might be.

With his lilting, melancholy vocals and beautiful arrangements Brian Ritchey has released an impressive debut with the 7-song EP, a disc that’s very reminiscent of the early work of The Jayhawks, Ryan Adams and occasionally even Tom Petty and Nick Drake. Everything here from the upbeat opener "Guess That I’m Lonely" and the heartfelt emotions of "Apology" to "Forty Years" with it’s very effective piano work and the Petty-ish "It Feels Like Rock-n-Roll?" showcase Ritchey’s talent and make this a very worthwhile disc. Hey man, sorry I couldn't make it to Nashville for the show.I wanted to come, but I had already made plans to drink to excess elsewhere. I'm sure I'll catch you next time I'm in town. Hope the show went well...from the comments below it looks like it did.

that's just going to have to happen. it's a good thing we're playing on different nights, or we'd have to arm wrestle over josiah. Lord knows I have little boy arms.
