   About Capercaillie

From their homeland roots of Argyll in the highlands of Scotland, Capercaillie have been credited with being the major force in bringing traditional Celtic music to the world stage and inspiring the great resurgence so evident today.

Since the band's first innovative recordings of 1984, they have toured in 30 countries across the world (including South America, the Middle East and North Africa), released 10 award-winning albums (notching up over a million sales world-wide), performed and appeared in the United Artists movie 'Rob Roy' starring Liam Neeson and Jessica Lange, and had the first Gaelic top 40 single, 'Coisich a Ruin'.

Scotland’s finest celtic act, return with their new studio album “Roses and Tears”.The album features many newly discovered traditional songs sourced from the Gaelic song archive at the School of Scottish Studies, along with self-penned material and a beautiful rendition of John Martyn’s anti-war song “Don’t You Go”.

This album re-affirms Capercaillie’s unfailing enthusiasm for the music they inherited whilst growing up on the Atlantic fringes of Scotland and Ireland. Their innovative approach to traditional sources and influences and the excitement they create through live performance explains the widespread esteem in which they are held in the current explosive folk scene.

The line-up of the band (described by Mojo as “a marriage made in heaven”) unites sublime vocals of Karen Matheson with Donald Shaw - accordion & piano; Manus Lunny - bouzouki; Charlie McKerron – fiddle; Michael McGoldrick - pipes & flutes; Ewen Vernal - bass; Che Beresford – drums; David Robertson - percussion.

Press on Roses and Tears:

"a sublime marriage of traditional songs with modern twists" - Scottish Sunday Express

"...[roses and tears] skillfully combines newly discovered traditional songs ... with new material ... and a great cover of John Martyn's anti-war song Don't You Go" The Sunday Post

"polished collection of songs and ... sparkling instrumental sets" The Scotsman

Hi Karen, glad to hear it was a good weekend! We were sorry to miss the Abbey gig - the reports back from it sound wonderful. I'm impressed you got down to Alloway the same night as Auld Lang Syne! We're hoping to make the Capercaillie gig at Loch Lomond in July.

It was wonderful to see half of Capercaillie at the Auld Lang Syne concert - plus James and Anna from Karen's band of course! How lovely to hear Karen sing two such beautiful Burns songs and it's great to relive it all through the BBC's videos. Thanks for a fabulous concert.
