ELDERLY LIBRARIAN: Captain Nemo, you say? Mmm, of course! I remember them. Saw them a bunch of times, actually. Formed as a three-piece back in '03/'04, then became four when keyboardist Lara D came on board a year or so later. Well-rounded, dynamic indie rock. Rich guitar textures, uniquely unsettling vocals, ballsy sonic variations that make your heart pound in your mouth. Think Silver Jews, Joan of Arc and Akron/Family, with a bit of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's fragility thrown in.
MIDDLE-AGED WOMAN: OK, great. So they did exist. My 14-year-old son's compiling a list of important bands in the Sydney music community from the first decade of this century. That's all I need to know. Thanks, you've been very helpful.
LIBRARIAN: Did you ever hear Tweezer?
WOMAN: Uh...Tweezer? I have no idea what you're talking about.
LIBRARIAN: Angular heavy rock band from the '90s. One of Sydney's finest and most innovative, in fact. Think The Melvins meets Slint. Anyway, Captain Nemo's drummer Darren Skelsey and guitarist Matt Grant were both Tweezer members.
WOMAN: OK, I really should, um...
LIBRARIAN: Quite a pedigree indeed. Yep. You'd know Ukiyo-e - the atmospheric indie rock instrumentalists that emerged from Sydney in '99. Imagine Tortoise and Stereolab on smack. (Chuckles) Grant played with them. Or the band Further - high-energy artsy punk rockers from around the same time? That was Skelsey on the skins.
WOMAN: Look, I...
LIBRARIAN: Oh, and Lustre 4! Yes, I believe singer/bassist Nik Devinish used to play in that group with Sally "New Buffalo" Seltmann. So anyway, all roads led to what became Captain Nemo. They put together some demos and did a bunch of shows around the place with the likes of Magnolia Electric Company, The Tucker B's, The Tigers, Rand and Holland, Deloris, Purplene...
WOMAN: You don't understand, I...
LIBRARIAN: ..Midget, Leone Carmen. Let me see. Um...Charge Group, Underlapper, Golden Mean, Aleks and the Ramps. Yep, they did do some good shows. Mmm. I liked how every show was different. You always felt like something could potentially go wrong, and even when it did, it felt perfectly right. A real honesty and purity of purpose.
WOMAN: I really have to go. Sorry.
LIBRARIAN: Ha! Mmm. Just let me quickly tell you a bit about their first record. They did it in a community hall in the sleepy town of Clifton, just over an hour south of here, using as much borrowed gear as they could get their hands on, and then finished the mix with Mike Burnham at Tardis 2 studio in Marrickville. Nine songs - all came up a treat. The rest, as we often say in this building, is audio history.
WOMAN: That's...nice. Goodbye.
LIBRARIAN: Wait, don't you want to know what happened to the band after that? Their mammoth successes, their riches, their ugly and well-publicised break-up? What about their greed-driven reformation world tour in the '40s? Surely you were old enough to remember that.
WOMAN: Listen, you horrible fucking nerd! I don't care! Do I sound like I EVER fucking cared?
LIBRARIAN: Would you please keep your voice down? This is a library.
