I have managed to stumble on so many talented people who help me keep nudging my music forward. Bett Butler and Joel Dilley have provided so much guidance and hand holding and wisdom. Their talents and dedication inspire me. Without them, there would be no CD.
Recently I stumbled onto what was obviously a new pair of amazing people who heard something in my music and have been dragging me further along the road: Michael J. Lewis, Emmy-winning composer and producer, and his partner and preparationist, Alison Pryce. Michael's background in film scoring brought out the "movie music" side of me that's always been a strong influence, and has produced the next iteration of 3 songs from my CD: No Las Olvidaremos (for the women of Juarez), Darfur Lullaby, and Leaving Athens.
For those listeners who are thinking my voice has been improving, 'fraid not. After the philosophical question was posed to me, "Is it about the Song, or about the Singer?", I came to a deep realization that it is The Song that truly calls me, and writing for other, bigger, more adept voices is my route.
So, that's not me on these new tracks, but three amazing women, all from the Austin area:
On "Juarez" - SUSAN GREEN
On "Darfur Lullaby" - LZ LOVE (check her out on MySpace)
On "Leaving Athens" - JILL BLACKWOOD
I humbly state, these women took these songs where I could not. Not that I'm completely giving up singing myself, just give me something torchy and intimate. For the power ballads, and I love to write them, send in the pros!
For more on the rather odd chain of events that went on in getting to this production, check out my blogs. You can also find updates there on the on-going crimes against women in Juarez, Mexico.
And for a completely eclectic collection, do check out my CD, Slightly Overdue", which features tracks with a range of influences, from jazz to country to Latin, to folk, to, yes, the power ballads.
