Celestis is a Calgary metal band, a project born in November 2006 at the hands of Alex "Alyag" Popravko and Al Dobbins. Alex had just left his old band - Eternal Warcry; meanwhile, Al was on the prowl for bandmates. Within the first several weeks of jamming, the two had conjured up a near-complete setlist of original songs, as well as multiple retro/pop covers (such as ATC's Around The World and Rupert Holmes' Pina Colada Song).
As a couple guitarists could only go so far, the hunt for band members had begun. After a few failed attempts at finding a bassist and a drummer via AlbertaMetal.net, Alex turned to his ex-bandmate Josh for help. Chris, never part of the original plan, was a late addition following the leaving of Andrew Antenucci (ex-Lithica, ex-Carved Out, ex-Deleratus, Train Bigger Monkeys), and the temporary fill-in work of Jon McLean (Nosis).
We play metal. Melodic heavy metal, as it were. Heavy, chunky, powerful and driving rhythm behind catchy, melodic leads. (With occasional thrash inspiration.)
We're serious about this thing; it's a project born of passion for the music and the people involved in making it. There is no doubt, we plan on making a professional career out of it. This doesn't mean we don't like to have fun, though. A band should be about enjoying what one does, but still being serious about how it's being done; at least that's the way it works with us.
