About me:

The Springfield Celts Mens Rugby Club was established in 1975. Over the years the Celts have created a tradition of hard hitting rugby often taking the best of teams out of their game plan. This tradition has produced several tournament trophies and union victories. The legend of the "Green Jersey" has haunted the Midwestern region for many years. The young players hear of the stories of destruction and victory and continue to wear the Green Jersey with pride.

Our players range in age and ability and come to rugby from various other sports, including soccer, basketball, field hockey, ice hockey and football. Most have never played rugby before; some have played on high school or college teams. We do not expect players to know the game of rugby when they come out; basic athletic ability is generally the only requirement.

We have two seasons per year, one in the spring and one in the fall. Practices are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00-6:30pm for the high school side and 5:30-8:30 pm for the men's side, and games are generally held on Saturdays. Home games are played at Kennedy Park (across the street from the airport) and away games vary from season to season. Most away games will not require an overnight stay, but tournaments generally do.

Rugby is a full-contact sport -- this means tackling! Our coaches teach the fundamentals of that skill and other skills important to rugby. Existing players are very supportive with teaching drills and other points of the game.

The cost of playing rugby is minimal. Cleats, a mouthpiece, and rugby shorts are the only equipment that is the responsibility of individual players.
