I just turned 16 and
have been playing piano and composing for six years. My awards
include the national ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and
Publishers) Young Jazz Composer Awards in 2007 (youngest ever) and recognized again in
2009, the 2009 DownBeat student music award for three of my compositions
and arrangements in the Latin group category-best Latin group, Reno Jazz Festival pianist for the all star combo 2009, member of the Young Composer's Guild
for the Music Teachers Association of California 2009, MTAC Composers Today state contest awards 2007 and 2008, Herb Alpert scholarship for
emerging young artist in 2008, 2009 Semi-finalist for the Southern California Spotlight Award for jazz instrumentalist, All Southern California Honor bands in 2007 and 2008, and other local awards such as "Musician of the Year," "Most
Talented," "Outstanding Soloist," and "Best Rhythm.” I've been forming
bands and performing at concerts since age 11. I gig all over San Diego county and beyond with my bands for private and public venues.
I currently direct a Latin jazz quintet called
Latin Connection at
www.chasemorrin.com/latinconnection, and a
trio called Chase Morrin Trio at
www.chasemorrin.com.
I play piano for the prestigious Palomar College 7 O'Clock Jazz Ensemble (big band)
directed by Stephen Steinberg on Monday nights, the MiraCosta
College Latin Jazz Orchestra directed by Mario Gonzales on Tuesday
nights, and the Ira Liss Big Band Machine directed by Ira Liss. I also love to play as a sideman for many bands around
town.
I studied at the UCSD
Jazz Camp on full scholarship during the summer of 2008 and 2009. I
studied music composition at CalArts with the California State Summer
School for the Arts program (CSSSA)-Innerspark in 2008 where I was awarded
the Herb Alpert Scholarship. In 2009 I received a full scholarship
to study at Berklee College of Music for the five week summer program and
was offered another full scholarship to study Summer of 2010. I not
only met amazing faculty, but met some great friends!
I composed the full musical score for
Canyon Crest Academy’s Corpse Bride my freshman year. I
conducted and played keyboards for Grease, a High School
Musical (ACT), Cats (San Diego Jr.
Theater), South Pacific, and a showcase of musicals (with Actor's Conservatory Theater group).
I was the musical director, conductor, pianist, and debut lead actor and singer
for ACT's "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown."
I study
piano jazz with Rick Helzer and Geoffrey Keezer, classical piano
with Kenny Ard (I am recently getting back into classical) and I just found a
new possible composition teacher, Anthony Davis. I am also about to take pipe organ lessons in exchange for accompanying the choir for Christ Episcopal Church in Coronado. Lastly, I teach a limited number of piano and drum students at my home.
I wish I had more time to take drum lessons myself. I do own a great drum
set and of course, my piano, keyboard, and synthesizer.

Hey Chase, Just did a gig tonite in LA with saxman Mike Carnahan. There was another young high school jazz quintet much like yours that were swingin' hard like your band. We couldn't believe these young lions! Very inspiring to watch your generation keep the jazz flame burning bright! Continued success in all you do man......
Hello. I felt like commenting even though I can't really think of what to put right now... this is exactly the kind of comment you really hate, right?... lol. Anyway, I heard great things about the concert and CD release thingy in the city of angels. Oh, where is LA when I actually need it.
<3 you. ttyl. no I am not bored. I am taking a wee break.
p.s. we need to argue some more about modes vs. key signatures when we next speak.
Thanks so much for the add. I love your stuff. I actually emailed you earlier tonight- I hope you can read it soon. We might come out to a show because I live about 15 minutes away from Del Mar-pretty cool.
well you got mad piano skills there. I was in LA at Grammy Camp this past summer and I'll be in LA again Jan I have an audition for USC. BTW Happy Birthday
