In the digital era’s continuing stranglehold on the music industry, a new breed of entrepreneurial artists are taking the spotlight away from the machine’s mass-produced pop clones. At the forefront of this new vanguard on New York’s highly competitive hip-hop scene is none other than Creature. Hailed by The Village Voice as being the city’s top one man street team, Creature has connected with his fans personally on the streets of New York. Selling 10,000 copies of his debut solo LP, Never Say Die directly to the fans, Creature is a unique force on today’s music scene.
Starting his career in the late 90s with the seminal indy hip-hop crew Trifliks with a Beatnuts produced single, street life and survival sent the crew their separate ways. Creature stayed on his grind however, working closely New York underground icons. The artists he has collaborated with is a true who’s who of the New York scene. The enigmatic Mike Patton, punk princes Ari Up of the Slits, and Def Jux artist Rob Sonic are just a few of the artists he’s worked with. Gaining more notoriety working on Mike Ladd’s critically acclaimed Infesticons record only added fuel to the fire.
Upstart label Sound Ink tapped Creature to work with the legendary MF Doom on the landmark album Vaudeville Villain. But it’s his work in the streets of New York that have cemented his name in the industry, winning him thousands of fans, allowing him to grace stages all across the U.S. and Europe. His reputation for strong lyricism and an impeccable work ethic allowed Creature to snag Rhyme Sayers impresario Slug and Rough Ryders’ Jin for his Never Say Die LP without so much as a call to an agent or manager.
Even down-time for Creature means work where a ‘light’ day may include doing photo shoots with Ricky Powell, or focusing on his upcoming book on selling records independently. But more often than that he’s on the street, in the studio or sharing the stage with the likes of Papose, Sadat X, DJ Premier, Common, or Immortal Technique.
Never one to stop the hustle, Creature has remained diligent planning his next release while tirelessly hitting the streets to sell his records, and promote his shows. While his undeniable presence prompted the Starz cable network shoot a feature on him, and while urban clothing labels like Methods sought him out for ad campaigns, an impressive list of talent was lining up for Creature’s next release. Prefuse 73, and Mos Def’s DJ/producer Preservation have all contributed to the effort. While very few are allowed into the lab to get a hint of what Creature’s next effort may sound like, rest assured it will be bigger and better than the last. A true testament to the legacy of New York’s hardest working artist.
Never say die…
