GIG REVIEW - CROWDED OUT - THE THORNS - WEST MIDS

Being a massive Neil Finn fan, and having seen Split Enz and Crowded House many times over a period of some thirty years, I was intrigued to see that ‘Crowded Out’ were playing at The Thorns. If I’m honest, I went along not expecting much. I’d recently been to see another Crowded House tribute, and had come away fairly disappointed. But what I got was a pleasant surprise, and a performance that was far truer to the spirit of the original than anyone I’d seen before. I suppose I am a harsh critic, being an ex-musician and also having seen the real thing so many times, but Crowded Out did not disappoint. Vocalist and guitarist Andy naturally sings like Neil Finn, and the band have obviously studied the arrangements, guitar and keyboard sounds and harmonies, and got the live sound just right. The keyboard player’s sound was particularly accurate I thought. Crowded Out’s choice of material is excellent too. They played Crowded House’s new single ‘Don’t Stop Now’, which wasn’t even released at the time! They also tackled some very difficult songs – many that the real die-hard fans prefer – and played them well, plus of course treating the audience to the big hits like ‘Weather With You’ and ‘Don’t Dream it’s Over’. I know looks aren’t everything, but they even looked the part. Bass player Tim could be Nick Seymour’s brother, and if front man Andy could grey the temples a bit… These lads will only get better, and they’re pretty good already. If you want a good night out, spent listening to the music of one of the most melodic and talented bands ever, go and see Crowded Out. It’ll keep you going until you can get your fix of the real thing, thankfully back together again and currently on a world tour. The renewed interest in them won’t do any harm to their best tribute band either!

GIG REVIEW - CROWDED OUT 'UNPLUGGED' - PONTEFRACT CASTLE, LONDON - 23/06/07 - A Special afternoon show ahead of Crowded House's headline set at 'Hyde Park Calling' later the same day

...Time was standing still, always the sign of a good gig, and after a simply fantastic rendition of 'I Got You' which was spine chilling, the crowd called out for more - talk about having an audience eating out of the palm of your hand... "Don't dream its over" was then followed by a shouty request session and we refused to let the band get off the stage - it's a testament to the boys passion that they put up with it all and after finishing as they had started (we missed 'Distant Sun', so I asked for it) they totally brought the house down. By this stage it was packed, it was loud, it was emotional, in fact, it was utterly bloody fantastic...

Crowded House are back!...
Ten years on from their triumphant farewell concert, 2007 heralded the exciting reformation of Crowded House, with headline appearances at London's 'HARD ROCK/HYDE PARK CALLING' Festival and the curtain-raising Sydney leg of the 'LIVE EARTH' concert series.
A world tour followed in support of their amazing new album 'Time On Earth' - Crowded House returning to the UK in November and December for sold-out arena concerts in Dublin, Belfast, Manchester, Glasgow, Nottingham, Birmingham, Cardiff, Bournemouth, Brighton, Wembley and the magnificent Royal Albert Hall in London.
In 2008, Crowded House played several UK 'Forest' shows in the UK, and the band also performed at the legendary 'GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL' in June. Work has also begun on pre-producion for the next Crowded House studio album.

Crowded House formed in 1985 when lead singer Neil Finn dissolved Split Enz after his brother Tim, the group's founding member, left to pursue a solo career. Crowded House's debut album was released to little fanfare, but two singles lifted from it became enormously successful giving the group US chart hits with 'Don't Dream It's Over' (number 2) and 'Something So Strong' (number 7) in 1987. The album had one of the longest ascents up the charts ever noted, eventually peaking at number 12.
Neil's reconciliation with brother Tim Finn led to Crowded House strengthening the line-up when he joined in February 1991. The Finn brothers subsequently cracked the UK market with the Top 20 hit 'Fall At Your Feet' (1991) and the Top 10 with 'Weather With You' (1992).
In June of 1996, Neil officially broke up Crowded House. That same month, 'Recurring Dream: The Very Best of Crowded House' was released, entering the U.K. and Australian charts at number one. In 2007, Neil reactivated the band with Nick Seymour, Mark Hart, and a new drummer, Matt Sherrod. The album Time on Earth followed soon after.
Over 20 years since originally forming, Crowded House have been responsible for some of the most memorable records and live shows of the 20th Century.

CROWDED OUT Band Biogs

ANDY THOMAS

As singer and guitarist with Crowded Out, long-time Crowded House fan Andy is of course compared on stage with Neil Finn, and is happy when fans offer favourable comment, although insists that nothing can quite match Neils' amazing voice. "It's so great just to play and sing all those magic songs and melodies", says Andy. "We enjoy getting as close as we can to the Crowdie sound, and having our own fun with it in the process." Favourite CH song: 'Distant Sun'.

TIM GROGAN

Tim Grogan takes on his role as bass player with Crowded Out quite naturally, and similarities to Nick Seymour are uncanny. Loves Crowded House. Produces his own art. Has Irish roots. Drinks Guinness. And perhaps most importantly, inserts the odd 'jazz' note here and there. "On purpose" insists Tim. Yeah, right. Favourite CH song: 'Fall At Your Feet'.

PAUL CROOK

When 'apparently' pipped at the post by Matt Sherrod for the vacant Crowded House drum slot, Paul settled for close-second and joined Crowded Out. Recruited on a job-share basis from the fabulous 'Sex Pistols Experience', Paul's rock-solid drumming proves to any non-believers that Crowded House, and therefore Crowded Out, can kick ass on stage. You have been warned. Favourite CH song: 'Locked Out'.

MARK MORAN

Gregarious former Sydney-sider and lead guitarist with Crowded Out, Mark flirts shamelessly with both six and twelve-string models. Goes to the movies with the occasional Mandolin too. Buys coffees at rehearsals, then knocks them over in a range of ingenious ways. Favourite CH song: 'When You Come'.

DANNY KISSACK

Having keys maestro Danny Kissack in the band is "like having your own toy wizzard," says Andy. "Ask him to play something - he plays it. Ask him not to play something, he turns you into a badger." Incorrigible. Fantastic. Pathologist. Watch out for low flying solos. Favourite CH song: 'Something So Strong'.

'at 21:02 5 July' doesn't scan as well as 'at 57 Mount Pleasant Street', although it makes about as much sense. :) x
