Danny Cockroach, one of Edinburgh's most up and coming rock bands, were formed in the summer of 2004, when the members of two other bands, LMNOP and Melted Onion decided to form a new band committed to writing original material and being a great live band. They straight away set to writing their own songs, hacking through their early funk, blues and classic rock influences on their way to recording a three song demo for a local Battle of the Bands competition. These three songs were recorded again in addition to two others in December, to provide the band with some product to sell at their debut gig. This demo was followed up by a proper EP the following spring, combining the best of the demos and three new recordings, which sold well into three figures at shows in Edinburgh. The band continued to work hard at writing, recording and gigging throughout 2005, releasing their debut album ZooFarm earlier this year.
ZooFarm, the debut album
The 14 track debut album ZooFarm is a fantastic record which combines blues rock, punk, classic rock, country and the odd touch of metal to produce an accomplished, polished and well balanced album which has stunned many, who have been surprised at the song writing talents in so young a band. Tight, varied and above all fun, this album encapsulates all that is great about Danny Cockroach. Read a review of ZooFarm in our blog.
Danny Cockroach - Live
Danny Cockroach's live reputation is formidable, having played extensively around Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders, including appearances such venues as the Queens Hall, Studio 24 and the Eastgate Theatre (Peebles) in addition to headlining at the Leith Festival earlier this year. Danny Cockroach's first gig outside Scotland took place in Nottingham in October 2006 at the Grand Final of the Liquidisco Acadamy Awards. With a commitment to putting on a good show, Danny Cockroach have forged themselves into a fantastic live act, with their high energy shows being characterised by a strong stage presence, charging and leaping about with their long haired members flailing their locks - Danny Cockroach in full flight live is not a sight to be missed!
Awards
Danny Cockroach's hard toil and strong work ethic has not been without reward. In 2005, they qualified for the finals of Unsigned Ltd.s Battle of the Bands. The same year, they made it to the national final of the Make It Break It competition, coming in the final 15 of their age group. Earlier this year, Danny Cockroach won Best Rhythm Section at Edinburgh City Council's Battle of the Bands, and in October played in the UK Final of the Liquidisco Acadamy Awards after coming runners-up in the Scotland leg (winners Twisted Willy were unable to make the final, so Danny Cockroach went through). Danny Cockroach came sixth out of the twelve bands (and were judged fourth best band by the panel)
Most recently, Danny Cockroach scooped four awards (Best Band, Best Bassist, Best Drummer, Best Guitarist [Lewis]) at the Portabello High School Battle of the Bands.
Media attention
The media have not missed out on the fantastic potential of Danny Cockroach. In 2005, no fewer than three of their songs were used in a short film commissioned by the Scottish Arts Council, a film which was shown all over Scotland. In addition, Danny Cockroach were interviewed on radio last year for Leith FM, a show on which they also had their song This Town played. Their music has also aired on Magic Cats Radio and was included on a compilation disc presented to world famous author Michael Moorecock. In addition, ex-rhythm guitarist/ vocalist PX was interviewed for the Edinburgh newspaper the Evening Times about Danny Cockroach's success in reaching the Make It Break It UK finals.
Explaination of the name...
The story of the band name (like the name itself!) is rather bizarre. One night our drummer, Jamie, was just settling down to a session of drumming when the telephone began to ring. Being the energetic chap he is, he immediately leapt up from the drum stool and dashed downstairs to answer it. But his father got there before him. As Jamie stepped into the room his father turned to him and asked: "Do we have a Danny Cockroach in the house?"
And thus was born our name.
