Darren Frank writes songs and sings them. He performs and records them as well. He has released some of these songs on his Coal To Diamond EP, an eclectic smashtastic sound extravaganza of proportions! Indeed, there is music on this recording to listen to! And if you hear it, you’ll know that it’s working! Because from start to finish, this record will play!
He is currently at work on his first full length at the Physics Lab. Due for a late summer release...
Other more notable points:
- learned to ride a two-wheeler at age 3.
- spoke with a lisp up until he was 11.
- was involved in team sports.
- listened to Rick Astley and Boyz II Men
- attended music college (retained some things, and forgot others).
- played and made II records with roger.

“Edmonton’s answer to Josh Rouse, Darren Frank... is one of the artists that will soon inherit the earth...”
-Aubrey McInnis, Exclaim! Magazine, Sled Island Review, August ‘07
“...This five-song EP immediately cheered me up from an already level mood, being joyfully and almost nostalgically melodic and as caffeinated as Wham in notable ways. It's a cliche, but people honestly don't make records like this any more and despite what sulky knuckledraggers like Three Days Grace might tell you, it's quite all right to be happy and not obsess about being misunderstood by girls...His songwriting is a simple mix of self-reporting and pleasant interaction. Coal to Diamond is also an apt name, with Frank's experiences being the coal while the polish on this more than capable pop-songwriter record is the gemstone.“
- 4 out of 5, Fish Griwkowsky, The Edmonton Sun, December 15, ‘07
“Darren Frank turns workaday woes into songwriting gold...The five tracks on the EP although recorded in 3 different locations, flow seamlessly, and the production has a crisp, atmospheric feel, while Frank’s voice could hold its own against singers like Peter Elkas and Ron Sexsmith...Coal to Diamond [is] a blend of mellifluous melodies strengthened by his rich but restrained vocals. And if you are under the impression that it’s a dark, self-indulgent affair, think again- it’s as celebratory as it is sad. It’s about turning those coals into diamonds after all.”
- Zoltan Varadi- See Magazine, December 13, ‘07
