"Nia" Mary Alice Boyd, along with member Karima Amin, co-founded Daughters of Creative Sound. Nia was a powerful percussionist; her love of music and especially the drum captivated all who heard her perform. She viewed the rhythm of the drum as not only life-giving but spiritual as well. We dedicate our first CD to Nia and express our sincere gratitude for her vision.
In the year 2004, each of the "daughters" heard the call of the drum and responded to its spirit.
DAUGHTERS OF CREATIVE SOUND is nine women of African descent
expressing ourselves through vocal, visual, and percussive avenues. The
DAUGHTERS' objective is the healing of the female mind, body, and spirit
through the arts. Our performances speak to Spirit and speak through
Spirit via instrumental and vocal music, storytelling, and movement that
touch the soul. Although women and girls seem to be most inspired by the
work of DAUGHTERS, all people who witness the group’s presence and
energy are moved by the women’s ability to entertain, inspire, uplift, and
educate.
We are storytellers, dancers, singers, and percussionists whose diversity of talents lends itself to a broad-based level of creative expression.
DAUGHTERS OF CREATIVE SOUND received the "Women of the Arts" award from "Preventionfocus/Womanfocus" in 2005.
Although DAUGHTERS OF CREATIVE SOUND is a relatively new group, we are proud to say that we have brought, joy, education, and healing to countless numbers of people who have enjoyed the "sound" and the "spirit."
