Influences
The first ’Oh Shit!’ moment was hearing Jackson Browne singing ’Doctor, My Eyes,’ on the radio, while I was toiling in the back of a KFC in my home town. I was fifteen. It shook me up. Before that I had listened to what came on the radio, and was mostly hooked on R&B. After the KFC epiphany, it was a push-pull between rockin’ soul like Sly, and the singer-songwriters. Dylan, Don Henley, Tom Petty, and Springsteen all made big impressions, as did Willie, Merle, Elvis Costello, Los Lobos, John Prine, Steve Forbert, Jules Shear and my many talented friends. Incongruously, I have always loved Steely Dan. Somehow it all shook itself down into what I do now.
I still get out to Monday open mic night at Kulak’s, and steal anything not bolted down. Subtly of course.
Sounds Like
Sounds a lot like what you are listening to right now. Only better if you buy it and hear a real CD on your cool stereo, instead of these compressed MP3 files on dinky computer speakers.
Buy it here CDBaby or email me and I’ll send you one. Put "Web Inquiry" in the subject box.
Long one of L.A.'s most beloved songwriters, Dave Morrison has made the album we've waited for ... There's keen intelligence, humor, depth and compassion. But more than anything else, there's heart. He projects genuinely poignant details of real life in a way few can with just words and music. With a stunning economy of language and visceral folk-rock feel, he paints dimensional pictures with a delicate blend of words and tunes. Mourn no more about the dearth of meaningful music. Listen to this.
Four Stars ... Paul Zollo, Nov./Dec. 2007
Excerpted from review in Maverick magazine UK
Dave Morrison is a storyteller. The fact that these mostly wonderful tales are set to music is an almost incidental but wecome bonus.
It's inevitable that he will draw comparisons with James Taylor, and given the West Coast connection(Morrison hails from LA), Jackson Browne, and the truth is that he probably fits somewhere between the two. Times Like These has the intelligent clarity of Taylor, while Everywhere I Go reflects the freedom and spirit of West Coast rock. To his credit, Dave Morrison apes neither and fills the gap with great originality and style.
Dave Morrison is a singer-songwriter in the best sense. His songs are not designed to be shoe-horned into a neat package. They are unique statements, and for its minor blemishes, A Little Farther Down the Line is on the whole a real gem.
.
"Dave Morrison is a songwriter's songwriter, but that's nothing new.
I've been hearing that from songwriters in the Los Angeles area for
many years now who were also describing Dave as one of the great
unrecorded songwriters in the area.
Times change. Dave has released
a great debut solo CD that surely lives up to its promise. More
importantly, Dave conveys those songs on stage like he's been doing
it his whole life, with passion, presence, and an irascible charm that
will win over any audience."

"With his debut album 'A Little Farther Down The Line'. California songwriter Dave Morrison delivers a fine collection of songs rooted securely in an appealing blend of traditional Folk and the best of the 70's singer-songwriter genre. His voice and approach is natural, accessible and unaffected, as he weaves his stories with subtle lines and a mastery of language that delivers a lingering impact, which continues to yield resonant value with repeated listening.
Dave's songs explore themes of love, longing, dreams and everyday dilemmas, with a wisdom and perspective tempered by time and a sense of melody and hope-tinged melancholy that brings 70's songwriting icons to mind. A fine album, well worth the wait." ... Brett Perkins, Listening Room Concert Series
Here's a couple videos. Don't forget to turn off the mp3 player first.
Hey Dave, as I was sitting in my chair at Kulaks waiting to go on after you, I thought "man, dave has never sounded better". thanks for singing the song about your mama.. I love songs about mamas.. I was moved. I need to buy one of your cd's. how much are they? I've been meaning to ask you for ohhh like a year or so.
I've been lurking in the outskirts of an ever melting landscape, hissing at the sleepwalkers... in a loving way of course!....;)
Other than that, I've been rebuilding and upgrading my home studio, a monumental but wonderful task, that is now up and running.
I miss you too my friend and would love to get together for lunch, especially to hurl incendiary remarks at an uncaring world..all in the name of love of course.
To quote from Frank Zappa..."Be a loyal plastic robot for a world that doesn't care"
Hey Brother - That was about the nicest myspace comment ever. I love you too, pal. Yeah, 2008 was pretty damn tough in so many ways - but hell, Bush is headin' out, OJ's in jail, the sun is shining - feels like God has finally gotten through all the paperwork that's been pilin' up and he's moving ahead with the agenda.
And yes - knowing you, sharing songs, singing, talking, laughing - always having you there in mind while working on a new one, thinking, "I think Dave is gonna dig this..." makes everything more charged, more meaningful. Nobody listens like you do, bro. You're a gifted man - and I'm here to remind you of it. Hope is alive. 2009 will be great.
hey dave, you're an inspiration and always good talking with you. have a great gig on 10/12 and we'll see you 10/18 at The Talking Stick in Venice, CA with Lorin Hart and Terry Holder. Looking forward to it!
Thank you for that amazing, lovely, sweet comment. You've been on my mind recently too, because I always feel terrible when I can't make your shows. I will definitely come to one soon, because I love your songs and because I miss you! It's hard to believe that it's been almost a year since our Kulak's show. Be well, my dear, and I'll see you soon - that's a promise! Kate
