Dave Murphy is a member of The Red Dog Saloon Band: Dougal Speir, Richard Te One, and Elliotte Fuimaono
Influences
Dave has been playing the blues since he was 15 but it was a trip to Australia six years later that he developed an appreciation of early finger style blues. He was influenced by blues musicians of high calibre such as Mississippi John Hurt, Rev. Gary Davis, Big Bill Broonzy and Robert Johnson, but always retained his own individual style. He never stops listening to others like Muddy Waters, J. B. Lenoir, Jimmy Rogers, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Sonny Boy Nelson (Eugene Powell), Hambone Willie Newbern and many more...

"The blues is a music made by people who have struggled, have hard and true stories to tell and do so in a voice that is compelling. Dave Murphy, 35 years a journeyman on New Zealand's blues highway, is one of those characters and this captures him at his essence: unadorned, honest and live as he records his long overdue debut album." "This is how music DVDs should be made, simple elegant shots of an artist plying his craft. This is no fuss, no panning, no cutting, no zooming in and out camera work, a delight to watch. Costa Botes's film resolution makes for an engaging spectacle whilst Dave Murphy’s Blues CD evolves before our eyes. A beautiful, relaxed but intense peek into studio life. Bravo!" Colin Morris
Dave Murphy is a legend of New Zealand blues guitarists. There will hardly be a musician in New Zealand who has not heard of Dave Murphy. In fact, Dave used to travel around the country in a white van with “Dave Murphy, the Kiwi Bluesman" painted on the side. Dave draws his inspiration from experience. He has travelled throughout America sitting at the feet of blues masters, chatting to whoever will listen about blues music and buying so many cowboy boots that they hardly fit into his suitcase. And he's paid his blues dues in 100's of venues, singing his heart out to 2 people, 20 people, 200 people - whoever listens. Nowadays, Dave plays as many solo gigs as he does band gigs with the Red Dog Saloon Band, and he sits in with many other musos.
As you will see on his video and hear on his first ever CD, Dave's voice is strong, warm and filled with emotion. He plays his guitars with consumate skill and passion. Carol Bean [Press Go], Robbie Duncan [Braeburn Studio] and Costa Botes [Lone Pine Film & TV Productions] worked together to help make "Yes That's Me". The result is a CD/DVD set that showcases a vivid and unforgettable performance from a man who has blues music deep down in his bones. The CD/DVD "Yes That's Me" is available in all good music stores around New Zealand.

The DVD was officially selected for the 2008 Wellington Film Festival. "Dave Murphy is a New Zealand blues institution, and Botes's film does the man, and especially his music, great justice. Botes is happy to include full and uninterrupted takes of Murphy doing what he does best - singing it as only he can and picking at a selection of guitars with a casual virtuosity that would send a lot of the international acts back to their bedrooms to practice for a few more years. 'Yes That's Me' is a smart and affectionate biopic that knows to let the music do the talking." Graeme Tuckett.
