Musician/artist David Turpin's first record, "The Sweet Used-To-Be", was among the most critically acclaimed Irish débuts of 2008. In October 2009, he will release his second album, the supernaturally-themed "Haunted!"
David started the album at home, continued it in a secluded cottage in rural Carlow with Derek Dodd, and finished it with Stephen Shannon in his rather more urbane studio. Conor O’Brien of Villagers plays guitar on four songs and sings on a fifth. Cathy Davey sings on one song. Cora Venus Lunny plays violin and viola on seven songs. The lovely Carla Amelia Gallagher provides backing vocals, and the hounds of hell also make an appearance. All the songs touch, to a greater or lesser degree, on spooks, spectres, and transfiguration.
Songs from "Haunted!" will manifest on David's MySpace music player in July. In the meantime, you can acquire the "The Sweet-Used-To-Be" at:
"Deliciously dark and dreamy [...] Already sounds like one of the albums of the year" - Nick Kelly, Irish Independent
"Deploying a wintery warble and gently chiming synths, he's produced a singular debut, a record steeped in bathos and mystery" (****) - Hot Press
"Truly different [...] likely to be among the best Irish albums released this year" - John Meagher, Irish Independent
"The best Irish album I've heard this year" - Martin Burns, News of the World
"Gorgeously stark debut album [...] a super-introverted fusion of Prince and Leonard Cohen" (****) - Metro
"Glistens with whimsical electro-folk [...] A boy whose heart unashamedly beats pop" - State
"Confident, endearing and just a little bit different [...] he could be the love child of the Pet Shop Boys and a Velvet Underground slow number" - The Irish Times
"This year’s most strikingly original Irish album" - Analogue Magazine
"With the release of this excellent debut, his hour has surely come" (****) - Sunday Business Post
