About Dead End Echo
Bill Heck and David Budnick became fast friends after meeting in high school. Back then, music, guitars and good times ruled the day. Each would travel down a different path post-high school, but they would maintain in close and constant contact over the years. Both made music, though independently, due to logistics (Bill remains mobile in the USAF and David crept down the east coast). In 2006, a transcontinental trip would prove to be the defining spark that would reignite the musical catalyst. Dave spent a week with Bill at his home in England and within an hour, a new song was written from scratch. Remarkably, after 20 odd years of separation, the music came together just as easy as it did so many years before. With this revelation, both knew they had to finally "get it together" and start to write and record. "Dead End Echo" was officially formed. Separated by continents, they adapted their writing process through emails, digital recorders, and home-made MP3's. Demos flowed freely until the time was right to take the next step.
Behind Transcontinental
Armed with several completed songs and a handful of raw demos in Spring 2008, the guys had their minds set on finding a drummer and getting into the studio as soon as possible. Luck would favor Dead End Echo when Bill (still living in England) contacted Mike Graci through an online auction site and learned Mike was a pro drummer who lived only miles away from David in North Carolina. David and Mike met up for some practice jams and personalities meshed. Mike brought some superb drumming and excellent rhythmic ideas to the songs. This added facet brought new life to the songs and the studio line-up was set. Bill on vocals, guitar and bass, David on guitar and bass, and Mike on drums/percussion. Luck would strike twice when they teamed up with Rob Tavaglione of Catalyst Studio. With Rob's magical musical ears, masterful mixing abilities, and unsurpassed bass playing, the songs quickly reached new levels of professionalism and sonic sweetness. All nine songs were recorded in one week during July 2008, which the guys describe as "probably the most fun you can have with your clothes on." Songs were sculpted, fajitas were devoured, and a good time was had by all. Bill and David decided on "Transcontinental" as a fitting title of the recording due to the previous and ongoing nature of their relationship (Bill has since moved to Germany!). The Transcontinental CD was mastered by Dave Harris from Studio B in Charlotte NC. Mr. Harris brought all the hard work to the surface and offered up a brilliantly mastered audio prize.
