Delerium

The fifth full-length Nettwerk release from Vancouver-based duo Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber, Nuages Du Monde (Clouds of the World) continues the evolution of Delerium from creators of predominantly instrumental filmic sounds capes to a fully-fledged vocal group. Featuring an array of renowned singers, Nuages Du Monde neatly combines the more overtly commercial pop of previous album Chimera (2003) with the lush sensual ambience and cloistered harmonies of 1197s Karma, a meld that bridges the gap between world music, new age electronics and modern classical.

The album features a number of collaborators new to Delerium, including the accomplished Juno award-winning Punjabi singer Koran Ahluwalia, who dominates one of the more dancefloor friendly album cuts, the heady Bollywood meets 4/4 beats of Indoctrination. Meanwhile, Isabel Bayrakdarian is a highly esteemed Armenian-Canadian soprano with a wonderfully expressive voice, who recently opened gala night at the New York Metropolitan Opera opposite Bryn Terfel in Mozarts Marriage Of Figaro and proved a huge hit in the same role at Londons Royal Opera House. Her acclaimed collection of Armenian liturgical songs, Joyous Light, pricked the ears of composer Howard Shore and led to a personal invitation to contribute to his multi-million selling Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers soundtrack. Baryakdarian, whose wordless, almost muezzin wail adds dramatic tension to album opener Angelicus and the darker tones of Lumenis, is a singer searching for something very personal in her music. What Im most interested in is beautiful singing something that speaks to me, she says Thats my main guideline to everything that I sing, whether its opera, recital or concert a sentiment you can be sure that Messrs Leeb and Fulber agree with wholeheartedly.

The album also features contribution from a host of Delerium regulars; Faithless vocalist Zoe Johnston, Kristy Thirsk (a stalwart since their 1995 Nettwerk debut Semantic Spaces), and sessions virtuoso Kirsty Hawkshaw, whose CV is a veritable whos who of electronic music, including Orbital, BT and Tiesto. However, fans of Deleriums more cinematic moments will not be disappointed by the grandiose Tectonic Shift, a slow-building storm cloud of an instrumental, augmented by sweeping John Barry-esque strings courtesy of arranger Chris Elliott (Moulin Rouge, Rufus Wainwright), whilst the haunted Apparition provides Nuages Du Monde with a suitably elegiac conclusion. On the other side of the coin, the Jael fronted Lost And Found is a radio friendly vignette of lazily seductive pop that taps a more commercial vein, while English vocal group Mediaeval Baebes add a dose of religiosity and sophistication to Extollere and the pretty Sister Sojourn Ghost.

Nuages Du Monde proves another notable milestone on the ever-metamorphosing musical landscape of Leeb and Fulber.

Previous Delerium recordings for Nettwerk have included Semantic Spaces (1995), breakthrough album Karma (1997), Poem (2001) and Chimera (2005). The band have sold over a million albums in North America alone, but are also known for a string of successful singles, including the worldwide dance smash Silence (featuring the vocals talents of superstar Sarah McLachlan), which sold over 300,000 copies in the UK alone. Other hits have included After All, Innocente, Falling In Love), Underwater and Heavens Earth.

Leeb and Fulber have a number of other highly regarded musical collaborations under their belt, most notably the influential industrial act Front Line Assembly, while Fulber has found solo success as a producer and more recently with his celebrated ethno-ambient pop project Conjure One.

Im a longtime fan of Leeb/Fulber projects. "Chimera" concerned me they were heading in a commercial direction. The release of "Nuages du Monde" calmed these concerns (although some vocals on songs such as "Angelicus" & "Indoctrination" became annoying after several plays). The new song "Gravity in Dust" sounds similar to "Tears from the Moon" but with a generic Delerium sound.
As a fan I have a few pointers for Leeb/Fulber:
#1- Don't worry about making into the mainstream. You may lose a loyal fanbase that has supported your career over the years.
#2- Give the song "Silence" a rest....geez...enough is enough. You have had other songs just as good.
#3- Consider releasing an album of instrumental versions of certain songs. I think this would appeal to crossover audiences from your FLA projects.
Sorry for the critical sounding post, but I love you guys and hope to continue enjoying new releases that stay true to the original Delerium concept. Please don't sell out!

sorry for this critical message...

i hope the new album is not in this style of music and that delerium goes back to the roots like karma or semantic spaces!

Hello, our last mailout of 2009 consists of TWO free high quality electronic albums for you to enjoy!

[S27-031] PINKLOGIK - Learning To Trust Higher Frequencies : Remixed
(IDM, Electro, Ambient, Abstract, Psychedelic)

Hello all, this will be our final release of 2009, and a great way to end the year... Pinklogik asked 10 artists and friends to remix her entire "Learning To Trust Higher Frequencies" album and what an eclectic and stunningly produced work this is. Each track has its own feel, thanks to the diverse range of artists involved in the project. A shimmering journey through ambient colours, broken beats, sweet melodies, a little bit of quantum physics, and is one hell of a trip.... Out now for free download!

Also from S27...

[S27-030] MIN-Y-LLAN : Dark Days
(Downtempo, Ambient)

We are fast approaching the last days of 2009, so what better way to celebrate than this release from Welshman "Min-Y-Llan" who offers us this collection of atmospheric ambient pieces, the melodies within are dark and cavernous, being the perfect listening for the walk home on a frozen winters evening. Each track has a very melancholic feel as if looking towards a future that isn't as bright as we hope for, but nevertheless are powerless to escape.
Free download!

These releases can be listened to and downloaded at:

"...Black, cold, the surrounding space. Without sound, without a bit of breath. Somewhere far away beyond the borders of the senses, outs of time, you can hear hopelessly long cries, sad, never-ending monotonous song of emptiness. Emptiness fills everything. Even hearts so far full of life now are dead. All overflows undescribed sorrow, starting off where everything was beginning. Amazing black, deep unlimited black. Darkness nothing more, there is no light. Far flare of perspective changes driven every day. The hours, days, months, years are irrelevant. Waiting gradually turned into the reluctance, the reluctance into sadness, sadness into pain. Far strenuous pain, of all colours of grey - the colour black. ..."

"...Czarna, zimna, otaczająca przestrzeń. Bez dźwięków, bez odrobiny tchnienia. Gdzieś daleko poza granicami zmysłów, poza granicami czasu, słychać długi rozpaczliwy krzyk, smutny, niekończący się monotonny śpiew pustki. Pustka wypełnia wszystko. Nawet dawne pełne życia serca są martwe. Wszystko przepełnia nieopisana żałoba, zaczynająca się tam gdzie wszystko miało początek.Niesamowita czerń, głęboka nieograniczona czerń. Ciemność to wszystko, nie ma światła. Daleki rozbłysk perspektywy zmiany napędzał każdy dzień. Godziny, dni, miesiące, lata, to bez znaczenia. Oczekiwanie stopniowo przeradzało się w niechęć, niechęć w smutek, a smutek w ból. Daleki męczący ból, o wszystkich kolorach szarości - kolorach czerni. ..."

I'll admit that the new song does not sound like traditional Delerium music. However it does have a great beat to it, and I hope to hear it more often. I like the video too and wish it was available with the CD single at iTunes.

Not sure what happened but the new song doesn't sound like the delerium I know. Hopefully you got paid alot to make it. Seeing how there is only 122 people playing that song there must be more people that feel the same way I do. Hope to hear more of the older stuff.
