STAKKER UPDATE: Week of May 16th, 2008
* Wrap Up
* THIS weekend: Breakbeat Booty at Temple on Fri, Bay to Breakers After party @ Shine on Sunday
* NEXT weekend: Dex's first unbooked weekend since February. While I am astounded and thrilled at what an 8-9 week run that was , I still have too much new good music, and not enough chances to share it, so I look forward to picking right back up again. (In the meantime, I'm gonna go dance like crazy without worrying about whether someone is swiping my record bag. :))
Groovers and Shakers,
WRAP UP

Thanks to Eric Sharp for the invite to play the Rock It Science 3-Year with Jonboy last Friday, and to B. Smiley for helping us find our bass.
Big ups to my tag-mates this weekend: JonBoy for braving the sound system that tried to derail us until we adapted and overcame by going 1-for-1 one, him on a vinyl turntable, and me on a CD-turntable (since one of each didn't work). Deckard for voluntarily going one-for-one with me on CD turntables, him in vinyl mode and me in CD mode. And Syd for bringing us home after I briefly went to palooka-ville at the end and seemed to choose a couple of tracks at random (I wore vinyl (genuine imitation vinyl pants, anyways :) -- sorry, the other tag thanks mentioned vinyl, and I wanted to be consistent).
A big thanks to all of you who made a point to come out for Melyss' City of Dreams fundraiser. I got to Shine and made for the bathroom and had no less than six people excitedly assure me that they would be over at the Garage Mahal party later to see my set. Based on how big that Garage Mahal party had been in the past, I was leery of taking on both sets that night, but I put it out to you guys to make both and a lot of you did, doing your part in making both parties successful. Thank you. You know who you are, and there was quite a little band of you.

FRIDAY NIGHT (MAY 16th) BREAKBEAT BOOTY at TEMPLE feat. JEN LASHER and SCRATCH D
My Opulent Temple campmate, DJ Icon, has been steadily bringing breakbeat talent monthly to Temple, with past months seeing the likes of The Autobots, DJ Deekline, and General MIDI. Hot on the heels of her trip to the Winter Music Conference, she pulls in some stateside talent in the form of Jen Lasher and Scratch-D from the Miami scene.
A grouping of us Opulent Temple DJs will be manning the Destiny Lounge (the smaller white lounge downstairs) with the mandate of playing "anything but breaks." This is music to my ears right now (and will be to yours too) because, although my best new material is getting to be breaks-heavy right now, I have a whole horde of good electro house piling up that I've been dying to play. I wish I had three hours. :) What Dex is calling Triple-D will staff the lounge: Dex, Dulce Vida, and Dutch. If enough of you turn out, I hope that we can turn that little lounge into a safe haven for the underground and dance out little butts off. Who knows, maybe we can recruit some new freaks from the other rooms as well.
Details on headliner: Scratch-D
Miami's Legendary David Noller leader of Dynamix II, is among a very few of the first wave of American electro and bass music artists to have successfully translated their old-school credentials into new-school relevance. The producers behind classic roof-raisers "Bass Generator", "Feel the Bass", "Ignition," and the Gold Release selling over 600,000 units to date "Just Give the DJ a Break," carved out a signature niche in early electro with a kitchen-sink-style megamix approach, amplifying electro's energy level, deepening the low-end, and playing up its robotic themes with ample vocoded vocals.
The group was formed in 1985 by David Noller, a DJ who had just graduated Full Sail School of the Recording Arts in Orlando, Florida, Noller was immediately signed to Bass Station Records to record and release the Gold Record "Just Give the DJ a Break". Dynamix II appeared through a handful of other Miami labels before the pair set up their eponymous imprint in 1985. Although mostly of only local interest beginning in the late '80s, when electro died out in favor of rap, the determined group decided to forge forward into the future releasing their "Electro Bass" music and vowing to remain firmly rooted in the underground dance music scene. Nearly a decade later, U.K.-based label Rephlex -- owned by Richard James, aka Aphex Twin -- reissued "Electro Megamix", a collection of Dynamix II Releases from 1985-Present, a non-stop all-in-one-place collection of their biggest tunes from over the years, originally released on the Joey Boy label in 1997.
A stream of new material, remixes and collaborations continue to appear from Dynamix II, most of their LPs and singles from throughout the years remain in print and are highly sought after by DJ's worldwide.
"The biggest f**king bass you are ever going to experience" - DAVE CLARKE U.K.
"If you look at the career these two have had, the ground-breaking tunes they have made and their dedication to Electro-Funk, I nominate them for heads of 'Bassline Security' in the United States. Maximum Respect! - RENNIE PILGREM U.K.
"Dynamix II's 'Just Give The DJ A Break' is an all time classic and their music has just kept getting hotter throughout the years." - DJ GODFATHER Detroit
"I'll never forget the first time I heard "Feel the Bass", the Bass got under my skin. Thunderous & life changing, I still have the original 12". One of the Innovators of the Techno Bass sound, Dynamix II knows how to DROP IT!" - DJ MONK (Rabbit in the Moon)
Details on headliner: Jen Lasher
Since age 19, Jen has increasingly become one of America's most beloved electronic artists. With her unique style both in appearance and live vocal performance/DJ Sets she continuously shows that she is a step up on the competition. Since her humble beginnings as a classical musician, she now has racked up a nice list of productions/ co-productions and vocal performances including her billboard charted CD w/ Baby Anne, "Assault and Battery," on System Recordings which included Jen's driving Industrial influenced single "No More Tears." Jen also co-wrote and sang on Dj Icey's CDs "Different Day" on System Recordings as well as the closing track on his latest CD release "Disco Rodeo" on Moist Music. Jen Lasher is a music monster and she is poised to take over the world in the not so distant future. Guaranteed to make the crowds lose control and fall in love w/ her at the same time. Put this all together and you have something that the whole world can, and soon will love.
"A top notch turntablist." Benjamin Leatherman - New Times, AZ
"D.C.'s Princess of Darkness" Mary Morris- Remix Magazine
"Lasher's vocal synthpop mix bears and industrial slant, will quickly become the guilty pleasure of any electro snob." Assault and Battery Review - Jen Boyles - URB Mag

Who I'd like to meet:
People that love people. People that love music. People that love breakbeat. People that love film. People that love movies. People that will wear freaky stuff amidst the squares. People that will wear square stuff amidst the freaks. People that love sport (especially when they throw in that "manship" part). People that love to help. People that love life.
About Me:
"I'm a guy who loves people, especially when they find a way to get along, and for that reason I find myself wishing that I had been born here in San Francisco. No matter, I'm here now. I've taken a seemingly late interest in spinning some records, until I realized that I had been doing the same thing (foisting music that I am passionate about on other people) for years on a single CD player. It tooks coming across Uberzone's "The Freaks" in 2002, coming across Hyper's "Wired" in 2004, and seeing Smoove and Fred Funk spin at a Love Parade 2004 to wake me up and realize that. For better or for worse, it's 100% about the music.
