Epta Astera was founded in Chapel Hill, NC in 2007 for a twofold purpose, The first of these is to hearken to old musical styles and methods: 4-part gregorian vocal harmonies, ancient instruments, melismatic melodies; and then to fuse them with modern aesthetics like metal and martial industrial. Though modern music and technology have brought many advancements (which made the band possible in the first place), we should not throw out the West’s rich musical traditions that brought us where we are. EA’s style varies from track to track (and often within tracks), ranging from fragile and orchestral to grandiose and bombastic, incorporating styles from black metal and post-rock to medieval and neofolk.
Secondly, we believe in the virtue and power of free culture and the freedom of information. Every work of Epta Astera will be available for free download, and source tracks are available upon request for remixing (or amusement, or whatever else).
In 2008, Epta Astera released their debut album, Ero Cras. The name is the reply formed by forming an acronym of the subjects of all the calls in the O Antiphons, from which we get the song Veni Emmanuel, backwards. Ero Cras is roughly translated from Latin “I will be there tomorrow”, referring to the imminent arrival of the messiah. The album, capped on both ends with the song Veni Emmanuel, is a concept album about the life of Christ, going through birth, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension.

On May 25, 2009, Epta Astera released its sophomore effort SALIGIA for download. Based on the seven deadly sins, the acronym for which in Latin forms the title of the album, SALIGIA is composed of seven songs, one for each sin. Drawing from such diverse lyrical sources as Hildegard Von Bingen, Federico García Lorca, John Milton, and Antisthenes, SALIGIA is a departure from the more minimal aesthetic of Ero Cras, and is filled with lush and epic compositions.
