'Oh yeah the music industry. Yeah, it's a piece of shit full of deluded "yes" men, most real talent gets located and sent to a horrible beast who then proceeds to program a machine to churn out the idea. Only when it leaves the factory the idea has overwhelmed everyone.' - Ryan L. West

'His most beautiful and beguiling creature yet' (8/10) - Drowned In Sound
'This latest outing continues to chart the young Icelandic composer's ascendance. Highly recommended.' Album of the Week - Boomkat
'It is a major piece of work in its own right/Users/Robert/Documents/RC/RC backup 2007-12, and deserves to be recognised as nothing less.' (4.6/5) - The Milk Factory
'If this essential record is what Arnalds can do in a week, his second album proper can't come soon enough' (4.5/5) - musicOMH
'OK I’ve finally been smacked in the face by the charms of Ólafur Arnalds... One of the most moving albums of neo classical music... It really is the soundtrack to the saddest moments in your life. It’s the future... But it’s the present... I can’t quite get my head around it all. This is some seriously beautiful music!' Album of the Week - Norman Records
'Enchanting Icelandic songsmith Ólafur Arnalds has been a favourite at DiS towers for a while but he's only gone and endeared himself to us even bloody more now!' – Drowned In Sound
'Ólafur Arnalds is a brilliant everything. I love nothing more than seeing genuine, hardworking, creative people capture attention of audiences, creating instead of complaining and talking. The new music industry is in their hands. The Erased Tapes team is a similarly inspired bunch. This time, he is creating a song a day for a week and is giving it away for free. I am happy people like him exist.' – Anthony Volodkin, The Hype Machine (US)
'Rare is the modern composer that edges above and makes classical music cool, yet Ólafur Arnalds does so with grace and simplicity.' – FensePost (US)
'West’s Rival Consoles project revives the schism between the commercial house music of suburban hell-holes and the perverted beats of electronica’s golden boys. A massive slice of jagged grandiosity... 'IO' is a party record even snobs can enjoy.' (7/10) – NME
'A new sulphuric wave is about to wash over our dancing forms and reduce us to boogieing bones - and Ryan West, aka Rival Consoles - is riding it on an acid-proof surfboard. Old skool 303 squelchin' debut album 'IO' is out now on Erased Tapes, leading the crusade against tired welterweight club rhythms. His own grooves foreground tough, funky electronic snaps and crackles, one minute indebted to the techno godfathers, the next paying reverential tribute to the masters of electronica' – DJ MAG (UK) Fantastic Four Feature
'If you miss the Aphex Twin who wrote songs that lit up warehouse raves at 3 a.m. but still tied your brain into knots, do yourself a favor and check out Rival Consoles. Ryan Lee West is a nascent IDM hero on IO' (9/10) – XLR8R (US)
'The music of Ryan Lee West writhes in a field of its own, twitching and buzzing like little else... One of the best releases of its kind this year.' – Clash
Thrilling stuff, primed for the more discerning floors...' Top Download – Bleep
'One of the most exciting new British talents. IO is the confident debut album of a man dotted of a clear vision and a sharp mind' (4.6/5) – The Milk Factory
'It creaks, it rattles, it makes a horrible noise and sometimes sounds a bit like ancient Nintendo games. It's like nothing you've ever heard before!' – Musikexpress (DE)
'This is an act which it's totally cool for you to like!' – Rock Sound
'Some stirring electro-tinged synth and drum machine collisions. An inventive use of machinery all-round, reaching a peak with the flood of analogue goodness that is 'ARP'.' – Boomkat (UK)
Peter Broderick
Music for Falling From Trees (ERATP015)
'It's exciting to hear his talent develop in something like real-time (given the fast pace of his output), as he finds his way toward a breakthrough that seems tantalizingly close at hand.' - Pitchfork (US)
'Beautiful, minimal and bewitching, it is both another reason to hate Peter Broderick and another reason to admire him.' - Mojo
'Peter Broderick is painfully young and unnervingly talented' - Intelligent Life
'A precociously talented, classically trained multi-instrumentalist' – The Independent
'This is a rewarding audio only experience, reinforcing Broderick's reputation as a multi-talented, wonderfully gifted musician and composer' – Clash
'A melancholic, chaotic and uplifting exhibition of a composer at his best - a sublime treat, requiring start to finish indulgence' (8/10) – Rock Sound
'The seven compositions presented here are wonderfully evocative and nuanced, and carry the idea of the narrative very convincingly.' (4.6/5) – The Milk Factory
'By now, Peter Broderick's credentials need no repeating; his solo albums have quickly become among the most respected in the recent modern classical canon, but his talents stretch far beyond that... Broderick's music paints its own vivid and very opulent picture.' Album Of The Week – Boomkat
About the Falling From Trees dance premiere:
'Highly articulate... an ambitious piece and powerful in its content' – Josephine Leask
(The Guardian)
'Both insightful and intelligent' – Mina Vadon
(The Place)
'Is the world ready for yet another post-rock band? The answer is yes! "Paper Canyon" overflows with gaping gorges of pretty passages prone to gathering momentum before enveloping unsuspecting ears whole... A debut record of real maturity!' Best New Music – Rock Sound
'A perfectly presented first statement of their intentions... sending jolts from shoulders to fingertips.' (8/10) – Clash
'It's easily one of the most refined and complete sounding instrumental post-rock long-players of recent times. Recommended.' – Boomkat
'At times crestfallen and regretful, at others furious and passionate, this album is a synergy between exceptional percussion and dizzying whirlpools of guitar riffs.' (4/5) – NARC
'Paper Canyon is a remarkably tight ship...from soppy piano picks to lush, pounding heroism and epic rabbit-punches of distortion. It goes to confirm that, in the right hands, post-rock works like a dentist, extracting bicuspids of bloody emotion from the mouths of people with weak spots.' – Cokemachineglow (US)
'Their music brings the sonic deluge associated with their genre, kidney-punching you with crescendos that leave you in surgery, coupled with the fragile stitching of clean guitar lines that help you recuperate. Codes does show they are capable of more surprising melody-making, particularly in the star-charting patience of "The Distance Between Us"' Track Of The Week – The Silent Ballet (US)
'One of the hottest releases for the genre...the whole work seems to be a crescendo of emotions that explode in the final tracks, turning your insides upside down. A must have!' – Sound Magazine (IT)

very promising career!' Ones To Watch in 2009 – Rock Sound

'Minimalist techno soundscapes that still include the post-rock sensabilities and emotive song composition abilities that Ólafur is known for. West is in full-on techno mode.' (8/10) – Drop-D (IE)
'A well-suited pairing on Erased Tapes, Kiasmos and Rival Consoles team up for some stirring electro-tinged synth and drum machine collisions. An inventive use of machinery all-round, reaching a peak with the flood of analogue goodness that is 'ARP'.' – Boomkat (UK)

'A 7" on Erased Tapes has fallen into my fat lap and it's a beauty. 'Helvetica' spills with that melodic, scattershot breaks stuff, dramatic harpsichord synth lines crying over playful, erratic drum patterns to make wondrous childlike sonic architecture.' – Single Of The Week Norman Records
'Although this EP was not recorded as a concept piece, like many compilations of classical pieces it could easily be interpreted as such, not so surprising seeing as this guy has also repeatedly performed at the Tate Museum.' (7/10) – Drop-D (IE)

'Finn. gently strums fragile, heart-rending post-rock pop. Recommended!' – Time Out
'Haunting, symphonic balladry and cinematic pop music, at times resembling the low-key dynamics of Bon Iver, whilst at others evoking Sigur Ros at their most spine-tingling. Recommended!' – Boomkat
'Zimmer has produced an album to be proud of... It nearly has the grandeur of Pink Moon–era Nick Drake' – Spectrum Culture (US)

In April 2009, Iceland’s neo-classical export Ólafur Arnalds created the 7-song series 'Found Songs' – recording a song a day for 7 days and instantly making each track available via Twitter. With artwork contributions from fans via Flickr, this modern release awakens memories of a tradition that seemed lost in the digital age we live in.
Born in 1987, Ólafur hails from the suburban Icelandic town, Mosfellsbær, just a few kilometres outside of Reykjavík. He has immersed himself completely in a world of delicate symphonic compositions generating near weightless orchestral pieces. Arnalds explores the crossover from classical to pop by mixing chamber strings and piano with discreet electronics which makes him a perfect fit for cinematic pop label Erased Tapes. His motivations are clear: 'The classical scene is kind of closed to people who haven't been studying music all their lives. I would like to bring my classical influence to the people who don't usually listen to this kind of music…open people's minds.'
This young artist is steadily gaining recognition worldwide since his 2007 debut 'Eulogy for Evolution'. The 2008 follow-up EP 'Variations of Static' earned Ólafur acclaim from both the contemporary and classical field – transcending a traditional divide by uniting their ideals. After filling London’s world-famous Barbican Hall, fellow Icelanders Sigur Rós invited Ólafur to open their most recent European shows, playing to an audience of over 5,000 per night.
With the next full-length release due this winter, Ólafur conceived 'Found Songs' as a way to collate several lost and found musical sketches and ideas in a 'very challenging, but fun' series. The experiment offers its listeners an intimate insight into Ólafur Arnalds' creative world. 'The songs will be different from what's on my albums; they will be short, mostly just made up from piano. Something to keep me going…'
So far more than 70.000 people downloaded the 'Found Songs' series via foundsongs.erasedtapes.com. Each track inspired a wealth of artwork from his fans – submitted via Flickr. Hosting this project on their official website, Erased Tapes Records watched the collaboration between Arnalds and his online audience flourish and found it fitting to combine the music and artwork into one complete work. A re-mastered physical and limited edition is now available as a CD, 10” Vinyl and high-quality DownloadHERE.
'Enchanting Icelandic songsmith Ólafur Arnalds has been a favourite at DiS towers for a while but he's only gone and endeared himself to us even bloody more now' – Drowned In Sound
'Ólafur Arnalds is a brilliant everything. I love nothing more than seeing genuine, hardworking, creative people capture attention of audiences, creating instead of complaining and talking. I am happy people like him exist' – Anthony Volodkin, The Hype Machine (US)
Ólafur is currently in the studio with Bardi Johannsson (Bang Gang) who will be co-producing his upcoming album. Arnalds growing reputation has also won him the attention of the internationally renowned British dance choreographer Wayne McGregor who has invited Ólafur to score his brand new work. 'Dyad 1909' will be premiered in London at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre this October. The show will go on a EU-wide tour with Arnalds included in an impressive creative line-up alongside acclaimed artists and filmmakers Jane and Louise Wilson.
CINEMATIC DANCE MUSIC FOR THE MORE DISCERNING FLOORS
RIVAL CONSOLES is youthful purveyor of intelligent dance music Ryan Lee West. With his highly anticipated debut album, West, the first born and long-standing artist on Erased Tapes, has crafted an electronic record to transcend the discerning and flirt a little with the club culture of summer 2009. I–II–III–IO !
Born November 10th, '1985', Ryan Lee West grew up in the small city of Leicester in the midlands of England. Fascinated by sound from an early age, Ryan chose to dedicate his time to studying, experimenting with and producing sound at De Montfort University Leicester.
West strives to humanise and at the same time emphasise entirely computerised sounds to defy categorisation in modern electronic music. Rival Consoles combines a clever and complex mix of hard-hitting beats with catchy acid melodies.
Or as he describes it in his own words: ‘Rival Consoles is a musical project where I take ideas which are cheap and processed, and combine them with rich, unpredictable patterns – resulting in music which appears commercial yet typically against commercial music at the same time.’
Earlier EP releases clearly define his progression from ‘The Decadent EP’ and the follow-up 7-inch ‘Helvetica’, where instead of X-Box vs. Playstation, classical theory meets dance. More recently West contributes three album tracks, ‘Milo’, ‘Func’ and ‘ARP’ to his 12-inch split EP with Ólafur Arnalds’ minimal-techno outfit Kiasmos.
There is more to this freshly graduated 23 year-old than meets the eye, for those not content with 4/4 beat dance floor stormers; West is fast establishing himself as both a sound designer and programmer. Having repeatedly performed at the Tate Britain Museum in London, where he drew over 2000 visitors into his unpredictable, yet detailed sound drawings ‘…using self-created sound manipulation tools in MAX/MSP and Super Collider’. New York based composer Nico Muhly, known for scoring the Oscar-nominated The Reader and his collaborations with artists from Björk to The National, is amongst one of the first to receive West’s trademark remixes.
After having supported his city neighbours and label comrades Kyte on a first extensive European tour last winter, Rival Consoles will embark on a first headline tour throughout the UK and Europe later this year.
Peter Broderick is like the Swiss Army Knife of musicians; compact, elegant, multipurpose. What sets him apart is his restraint. With an arsenal of talents at his disposal, he prefers to reveal only one or two at a time. No wonder his latest work found a home with Erased Tapes...
June 1st sees his first major release of 2009, ‘Music for Falling From Trees’, a 30-minute piece, in seven sections, created for a contemporary dance by London-based choreographer Adrienne Hart (Neon Productions). Adrienne was looking for a score of piano and strings, so he left the guitar and his voice aside and focused entirely on those two timbres. ‘I decided to take this literally and make a rule not to use any other instrument. In the script it called for the sound of a ticking clock. I made this sound by tapping on the body of the violin with my fingernails.’
The dance tells the story of a man in a psychiatric hospital, and his struggle to maintain his identity. The music is sometimes melancholic, sometimes playful, sometimes chaotic, but with the combination of piano and strings, full of beauty, reverence and awe.
Peter will embark on an extensive European tour including festival appearances at Roskilde, Wireless and the Green Man Festival, starting early May with five shows in Ireland. ‘Music for Falling From Trees’ will already be available on tour and in the official Erased Tapes Online Store on Download & CD, which includes a free copy of the digital download compilation ‘Erased Tapes Collection I’.
Codes In The Clouds spent 5 days recording the album up North in Doncaster together with their label comrade and producer Justin Lockey, his brother James and Robert from Erased Tapes.
The debut album 'Paper Canyon' will finally see the light of day on June 1, but we will already be selling it at their support shows with Jeniferever to promote the record here in the UK. You can also already Pre-Order your personal copy online now. In autumn the boys will go on tour in Europe mainland again. This year will also see us release a download remix album entitled ‘Paper Canyon Recycled’ with contributions from Paul Mullen (The Automatic), Maybeshewill and others.
Thanks to the legendary Spanish director MacGregor and US independent film maker Mike Hedge we are able to present you a promo video trailer for Codes In The Clouds upcoming album 'Paper Canyon', out June 1, 2009:

It's the live debut of a new line-up and at the same time a good-bye ode to Iceland, as Ólafur will be touring Europe, America and Asia for the rest of the year to promote both of his releases.
After their appearance at last year's British Music Week in Cologne, it was only a matter of time until CITC would return to their beloved German fans. April will see the band team up with Texan post-rock colleagues This Will Destroy You for a show in Berlin and Duisburg as well as a couple of headline shows. Oh, and they got some new tour merch printed for everyone who can't await their album release. Have a look here.
The BEF debut record 'Chapter One: A Long Way From Home' will be featured in the December issue of Rock Sound, together with an interview and the title track 'A Long Way From Home' being featured on the covermount CD. You can get your hands on a copy from November 7th. Until then we can enjoy a sneak preview of what lies ahead of us... Order it here

Love for Erased Tapes:
'The music landscape would be a little less bright without the tiny British imprint. Counting such luminaries as Ólafur Arnalds, British Expeditionary Force, and Ghostworker among their ranks, the label has built a reputation upon release after release of haunting indie symphonies. Essential listening for sonic explorers!' (9/10) – Rock Sound
'In the short space of time since the label’s inception, Raths has put out several incendiary releases. In a similar vein to well-established contemporaries like Fat Cat and Xtra Mile, what sets Erased Tapes apart from many other DIY labels on the scene is their no-holds-barred approach to providing an almost unparalleled library of eclectic sounds. Many happy returns indeed!' (8/10) – Drowned In Sound
'What unites these artists is gently dreamy euphony.' – Spiegel (DE)
'The small but charming Erased Tapes label (those responsible for prime minimal cinematic pop and delicate IDM)' – Loud And Quiet
'Erased Tapes are one of the most promising labels at the moment. They seem to be showing great diversity, but excellent focus.' – The Milk Factory
'The Erased Tapes label has some mad talent on it, quite impressive for such a fledgling brand.' – The Silent Ballet
'This year's most beautiful live constellation comes in the form of an Erased Tapes Christmas Special post release night! You'd be mad to miss it!' – Rock Sound
'I love nothing more than seeing genuine, hardworking, creative people capture attention of audiences, creating instead of complaining and talking. The new music industry is in their hands. The Erased Tapes team is a similarly inspired bunch.' – Anthony Volodkin, The Hype Machine
'Breathing new life into the music industry!' – Kent On Sunday
