An Unpopular Pop Group!! Based in Manchester, formed in 1985 and played regularly at the Red Admiral in Hulme which is where the band lived (Hulme not the pub but we didn't half spend some time in various watering holes in Manchester) apart from Vic who was a Salford lad with a motorbike. With a do it yourself ethos, some very, very basic equipement, loads of enthusiasm and shirts with their own volume controls, the band played regularly in Manchester before a demo came to Martin Hannett's attention. He recorded Pessimistic Man at Strawberry Studios in Stockport but the recordings were never finished.
The band recorded the song themselves and it was released late 1988 early 1989 via Guy Lovelady's Ugly Man label. It gained a lot of attention and the video was featured on MTV but differences of opinion, absolute poverty and years of starvation lead to a split. The band set up Fallover Studios a community based facility in Hulme before disbanding.
Last year, Arthur, Stuart and Paul met up with the intention of recording songs for a compilation CD. We don't actually have a title yet although I quite like "Arseholes! The Fallover 24 Story!" Another favourite comes from graffiti in Belfast, "Univercity is shite and all students are froots". Nothing is set in stone so if you've any suggestions, please let us know. On one hand, getting back together like this might be viewed as some form of delayed mid life crisis but in truth it was a realisation that time is marching on and there are some crackings songs that no one has ever heard. Oh and we'd nice social occasions too, playing, laughing and having a few beers at the end of the day but not too many, you can't push it at our age! Have a listen and enjoy.
i was boppin about to pessimistic man when i was about 18(iam 38 now). i lived in blackley at the time in the high rises off victoria avenue. it was a good time for music, everything exploded around manchester at the time, and pessimistic man got played a lot in our flat..all the lads loved it.we had a f****n ball.you dont realise how you affect people in life eh? its been twenty years since i heard it.and trust me i have looked all over for the twelve inch copy of it. once again thankyou.. thankyou thankyou. smithy.
