FUZU was started in 2005 when Sean Brokenshire (bass), Toby Forage (drums) and Grant Young (vocals, keyboard, programming) began experimenting with a bunch of new sounds. Grant and Toby previously played for Sydney indie-rock outfit Glance, and called upon Sean to begin the process of writing new material with a different slant. Dominik Malzacher (guitar) joined the three-piece in 2006, fleshing out the line-up and creating a more live sound.
From late 2006 the boys have been impressing live audiences across Sydney, the journey seeing them paying their dues playing many of Sydney's backwater establishments, right through to more recently playing some of the city's more notable live venues together with a fine line-up of bands. In 2007 FUZU entered Revolution Studios with acclaimed solo artist and producer Genevieve Maynard (Stella One Eleven) to record Between Your Lines, their debut EP. The 5-track demonstrated FUZU's clearly developed sound, built on electronic foundations and complemented by a patchwork of soaring guitars, melodies and grooves. The single It's Not There received air play on FBi radio, while the EP launch that followed in mid 2008 was setting to FUZU's best live performance to date, a crowning moment of sorts.
Since that time however things have changed - Grant bought a guitar. Yes, that's right - a guitar. There was no looking back - the rock pig was unleashed! The electronica that featured heavily in Between Your Lines has taken a couple of steps back into the mix, and while it's still there, the guitars have taken reign, bringing a new dimension into the equation - a dual guitar attack. Quickly Grant and Dominik developed a combined style of careful interplay and balance - each part always providing space for the other - while the watertight rhythm section of Sean and Tobes tightened the screws even further, and continued to provide the driving pulse that had always been a feature of the FUZU sound.
So where to now? Keen to demonstrate this new evolution in sound, and with a sense of excitement and a bunch of new material, the guys have recently finished recording 5 tracks for a brand new EP release, entitled The Point. The same tight pop aesthetic is still evident, as are the catchy, propelling grooves, and even huge-er guitars, but if anything the songs are more lean, stripped back and self-confident, and represent a growth and honing of the band's sound. The Point will be officiallly launched on 9th July 2009, and tracks are sure to feature right here - so stay tuned for more info!
The Point is now available through iTunes.
