CD: Grand Duchy "Petits Fours" (Cooking Vinyl)
Wiederholungstäter
The probably most unknown living legend of rock music has done it again. And again it's likely that you just inveterate Pixies worshipers the new work by Charles Thompson, aka Black Francis, aka Frank Black to get heard. How he can live like this, we are cryptic, because the breakthrough to Mainact has always denied he stayed. Can we do does not matter as long as he does so on such as now with "Petits Fours", the first output of the project "Grand Duchy", which he shared with his wife, Violet Clark from the midwife has.
And the wife a veritable Kim Deal replacement being made: The lady serving the bass not only on similar charming way, it is also the vocals are not far from Thompsons Mitstreiterin of glorious indie-times removed. In addition, it manages all kinds of gimmicks to synthie: Whether rich carpet of sound or spacey Geblubber - it all gives the usual oblique Thompson compositions a sugary ease, as she has the pop-oriented, early solo albums of the heavyweight Kłodzko head can no longer be heard.
During the difficult rumbling opener "Come over to my house with the usual noisy Gesch Rammel (incl. Black Francis Roar) up all time, imposes itself" Lovesick "with a lot of Breeders appeal as a single release (so it should because a) is virtually inevitable. Admittedly Thompson copied here himself, but what he does not resent until the pieces turn out so irresistibly catchy. Similar cases are "Seeing Stars" and "Break the Angels" - that is half the battle. There are the nice rock ballad "Fort Wayne", hoppelnden Good Mood Rock with B-52s-bonds ( "Volcano") and hybrid constructs between the dark electro-pop-rock and pigs commute ( "Black Suit , "" The Long Song ").
After the last two albums, Black Francis has revealed that he is aware of the intensity of his early works have not yet lost, Thompson seems to "Petits Fours" the middle phase of his musical creation back to life. This is not completely awesome. But appealing enough that he may like to do again. Please!
