Hamlet 2: Contest!

Hamlet 2, which premiered at - and was the comedy smash of - the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, stars Steve Coogan as a failed actor-turned worse-high-school-drama teacher who rallies his Tucson, AZ students as he conceives and stages a politically incorrect musical sequel to Shakespeare's Hamlet. The irreverent film's fine cast also includes Catherine Keener, Amy Poehler, David Arquette and Elisabeth Shue as herself. The director is Andrew Fleming ("Dick," "Threesome"), who wrote the original screenplay with Pam Brady ("South Park," "Team America"). It opens theatrically August 22 [view trailer] and while we wait for that, why not join in a fab new contest thanks to Focus Features and Greencine.
One (1) Grand Prize Winner will receive: a Sexy Jesus Doll and a Sexy Jesus Surfer Shirt; Five (5) First Prize Winners receive a Hamlet 2 Movie Poster and Bumper Stickers ("Rock Me Sexy Jesus" or "Honk if You Love Sexy Jesus").
To enter, email contest@greencine.com and include your name, email address and, if you're a GreenCine member, your username in the email, and "Hamlet 2" in the subject header. Entries without all this information will not be considered. (You will not be added to a mailing list!). 5 winners will be selected at random from all valid entries. The deadline is August 22. Winners will be notified by e-mail and announced in future editions of the GreenCine Dispatch newsletter

DVD Spotlight: 8/5.

"Stuck in the summertime hell of superhero crapola and CGI migraines, it's not hard from where I stand (which is, frankly, still a state of bedevilment about how the typically abbreviated and overwrought non-storyness of The Dark Knight has so many educated viewers bamboozled) to find relief in the forgotten matinee fodder of a less bombastic time," writes Michael Atkinson at IFC. "This week, it's René Clément's rather delightful 1964 suspenser Les Félins (The Felines), titled here (after the American pulp paperback it was based on, by prolific noiriste Day Keene) Joy House. There's not much that's earth-shaking about Joy House (except perhaps Lalo Schifrin's pre-Jerry Goldsmith score). But it's a movie in a way movies haven't been in a long time: graceful, relaxed, fun-loving, unpretentious." Also reviewed is the "overlooked Hungarian film The Witman Boys."

Stefan Ruzowitzky: "Sometimes Right, Sometimes Wrong"

The ghost of Florian von Donnersmarck is haunting Stefan Ruzowitzky, the Austrian director and screenwriter of this year's Oscar-nominateed [now Oscar-winning --ed.] The Counterfeiters, his compelling fictionalization of the men involved with WWII's Operation Bernhard at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Ruzowitzky's on a whirlwind city-to-city tour promoting his film. Whenever he wearies and asks, "Do I really have to go to Minneapolis?", his producers remind him that Florian von Donnersmarck went to Minneapolis and he won the Oscar. Whenever he complains about anything, his producers pipe up and say, "Florian von Donnersmarck [blah blah blah] and he won the Oscar!" Ruzowitzky laughs. You can't fight the junket. Resistance is futile.

Everyone, from the first person in line at the local film festival to the occasional Saturday night renter, has a list of movies they cherish. At GreenCine our mission is to serve as a bridge between your favorite movies and the countless number of films that you're destined to love just as much.
It's our belief that our favorite movies are stepping-stones to a bigger world. Whether you love comedies, anime or horror; whether your favorite film is a Sundance winner or a huge Hollywood hit, we can take what you know and show you worlds you didn't know existed.
With over 40,000 titles across over 250 genres, GreenCine has one of the largest libraries of independent, international and documentary films in the world. We have the movies you love, movies you've heard of, and a whole library of others just waiting for an introduction.
