One of my favorite songs he used to sing was Harry Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin'". I always told him he sang it better than Harry Nilsson. I can still hear him singing.

Thanks Ed... here it is... I hope it isn't too long:

I first met Hal in the mid-90s at Silk City Cafe (Manchester, CT) when he was playing with a trio. I saw him again in a duo a couple of years later in Ellington, CT. I made a mental note of it because I saw he could sing & play effortlessly. At the end of '97 I was looking for a new duo partner and thought he'd be perfect. I got his number from an agent and called him. We basically put the duo together on the phone and after a few rehearsals we were off and running. We played lots of gigs between 1998 and 2000 as The Wonder Brothers.
We were about half a generation apart, age-wise, and both had different musical tastes. Where we landed exactly on the same page was with our love of The Beatles. Two Beatles maniacs playing and singing together! It was really fun and different from most duos in that it wasn't two guitars, but BASS and guitar. We would trade off harmonies. One song he was John and I was Paul and vice versa. We couldn't play enough Beatles.
Since 1993, I have played in numerous bands, trios, duos as well as solo gigs. I've been fortunate enough have played with a great deal of very talented musicians and singers, some I've known forever.... and some I got to know, like Hal. Out of those thousands of gigs, the ones with Hal hold a special place for me. I'll never forget the way we sounded together. He was probably the best singing duo partner I had. We were told many times that our voices blended together so well that people couldn't tell where one voice ended and the other began. It was a blast singing with Hal; he always delivered.
I had a lot of respect for Hal as a musician, singer, songwriter and friend. We had a lot of great gigs, fun rehearsals and good times. I am extremely saddened to hear about his passing. I'm sure all of his relatives and friends know what a great talent he was. He will be sorely missed! My heart goes out to his family.

I will miss talking to you Hal. I was supposed to vist you at the end of march. But my plans changed. I just found out about your passing. I am deeply saddened.

I met Hal at the open Mic nights at the molino's, or the basement whatever it is called. We hit it off instantly. He was a guy you couldn't not like. He was energetic and a fun loving soul. I loved talking music and life in general with him. I am going to miss him a lot.

I only met Hal two times. At the Crescent Cafe in Nashville on the jam nights. The first time i heard him play i knew i wanted him to teach me a few things. and he is one of the few people that actually took to time to tell me all he could and try to help me play better. I will never forget the words of wisdom that he shared with me about how to become a better player. i also appreciate his kind words of encouragement. God Bless

Hal touched my life with the most simple (and sometimes hardest to find) of offerings... genuine friendship! He was always kind and a true gentleman - he took the street side when we walked in town so he could save me in case a car lost control and jumped the curb! Hearing him play and sing on this site touches me deeply and brings back some great memories. I will miss him dearly and he will always be in my heart. Now he gets to be the star in heaven that he always was to me!

I only met Hal a couple of times, a gig we played together in the mid 90's, and at Rob Fried's memorial. I wish I had gotten to know him better, life and times being what they are. He left behind some great music, but also an unfinished musical journey. Life isn't fair and friends go missing all too often. My sympathies go out to the Benoit family, and all his friends who never got to say good-bye-ED

I only knew Hal for a few months, but I will cherish the times that we spent together, playing music and being yankees in Nashville. Hal played with soul, taste, and passion...a giving spirit who could make a statement with silence...god bless you all...fly on

Without your support and encouragement, I doubt I could have gotten to where I am today with my music. Your "Bishop's Workshop" set the standard for what an open musical stage should be. You had just the right balence of welcoming and "OK that's enough now" to run it effectively. Thanks for everything and I'll miss our regular chats and especially miss seeing you this Sept. when I go to Nashville for the AMA'S. "Long May You Run"

Well, I am not good at writing about something as this subject is sorrowful and painful, but I will say this...I have found comfort and sense from some of the comments posted from other of Hal's friends. I am sympathetic with all of them.

Hal was my lead guitarist during two stints in my own band. He was a brilliant guitarist, great singer and very fine songwriter in my opinion. He, for some reason, became a champion of my songs around 2004 and then joined my band for several years. It was nearly always overwhelming to be in his company, but I enjoyed it. He had the temperment of a committed artist. He made my music better with his playing, singing and arrangements. I actually urged him several years ago to move to
Nashville rather than join my band because I sensed it would be better for him to be challenged there even though I dearly wanted him to join my band-mates. Anyway, we talked weekly on the phone and in person when he would come over and my wife, Donna, and I would host him with a good meal and drinks etc.. He was so alive all the time, hilarious, cantakerous, perpetually dissatisfied with his own music and most other people's as well. But he did have some heroes in the music world.

I knew he would prosper eventually in Nashville. I was always bolstering him and pushing him back out there for another round of getting bruises in Nashville. It became nearly a ritual with us.

My sorrow is deep but not as deep as it must be for Willie, Mike and Janet.

I will probably try to record a song of his because it is a very very fine composition and I will try to use his own band....and make some money for his family.

We did a little home recording about two weeks ago. I will cherish it.

Here's to a beautiful, splendid, and strident artist. I only wish I could have someday watched him from the wings as a large concert audience cheered him, but that is not going to happen.

I met Hal at a jam session here in Nashville and we became musical cohorts and friends almost instantly. He was that kind of a guy. You know, eagerly interactive- interested and informed in so many topics, conversation was engaging and animated with him the first time we met.

Soon after, he'd bring out his rig and play sometimes all night long at my house gig at the Starlite, out of his love of music and overall spirit of comraderie. It was a genuine pleasure for all of us to play his songs as well as his personal re-interpretations of classics. He subbed the gig for me a time or two, or he'd come out and play just to play, either way. What a loss. Hal was just getting started on this new adventure, filled with great expectations, in a new town filled with possibilities.

I am privileged and honored to have been a part of it. The last time I saw Hal, we had just started doing a co-write for a new song idea of his at my place, and then we went out for some Thai food. We emailed some updates but didn't get to finish it in time, I guess.

To Hal's family and children, I guess y'all aren't exactly children anymore- I am so sad for your loss. You may not have seen any sparkling marquees with his name all over it, since the move to TN. There just wasn't enough time. But he made some great friends and some great music in a short period of time here, and we will miss what might've been almost as much as you.

Stay well...

This is from Kathy Chiavola:
"I met Hal for the first time four days before he died. Our mutual friend Roger Saloom introduced us. I immediately felt I was meeting an old friend. We talked nonstop about our musical histories, family, Nashville, and our goals. He was excited about the future & fired up. He Knew he was in the right place. I know his music only through this site and am really sorry I never got to hear his great talent live. My condolences to all his friends and family."

A mutual friend put it well: "There's a hole in the universe now." Obviously, and Hal would argue, it's not about living long, its about living well. We should all be reminded of our privileged roles as eyewitnesses to history. 'Baby Talk' one more time! Miss him.

And so there goes one of the great journeymen to ever light up a song. His influence will be felt for along time by those who congregated around his sparkle. May his songs grant him immortality long after we've all joined him. He just had to get there early to set up the PA. Aloha......

I wish I had gotten a chance to know Hal. I just know that at every show I went to when I moved to Northampton, I would see his face in the crowd.

When I got the invitation from him to be his friend, I immediately accepted, based solely on the fact that we obviously shared a love of similar music, and I wanted to know more about his.

Many people are experiencing great sadness right now. Take to heart the fact that you got to know him and he touched your lives deeply.

For me, his music is all I really have to know him by. That, and the memory of a person who strongly supported the local music scene with his presence.

Music lives forever.
