Abderrahim Marrakchi Amrani, 44, is musician, teacher and master of the Hamadha sufi brotherhood. He sings God and life. He sings Sufi. His life is a melody and he tells to us in music. Difficult to make him speaking about his own existence. Each sentences is the happy pretext to quote a verse, to hum a poem or to tell a historical anecdote. Amrani is a well of stories and History. Not only about the Hamadcha sufi brotherhood which he’s the local leader in the city of Fez in Morocco. He is one of those holders of a memory which dies. With his fingers, he beats the rhythm on the table, pulls on his cigarette and regrets the whole culture that "the only oral tradition is not enough to make survive."
Abderrahim Amrani Marrakchi was born in Fez (Morocco), in Derb Mechmacha, the district of the artists, in the heart of the Old City before being taken by his uncle and his aunt in Constantine (Algeria), where he grew up. "Two major places of culture of the Arab world" he says. "I lived in the disctrict of Souk El Assar, homa fennia, in front of a great master of the Arabic-Andalusian music, Haj Mohamed Taher Fergani, and this is how I spent my first 15 years, rocked by this music which I saw today ». The uncle is a Malhoun fan. It was on his knees that Abderrahim learns his first songs and poetry, at the age of 4 years, "a song written by the great M'barek Soussi.
At primary school, he attends music lessons, "compulsory in Algeria and that I regretted the absence in Morocco." In 1978, the death of president Boumediene, the power of the Algerian military junta is increasingly threatening. Is it the fear of being accepted as a foreigner in Algeria or the conscience not to be the place that is his own?
Whatever, Abderrahim returned to his native city of Fez in Morocco. He was 16 and the school don’t worried him anymore. "It was Algerian history that I had studied me!" At the same age he attends alongside his father at its first "Lilla", a trance ritual. The fate is sealed. Musician you are and musician you will be, to the dismay of the patriarch who wanted his only son for a job "that could make a living and not just dreaming."
Faced with such a refusal, Abderrahim must be done alone. He visits the elders, urges him to learn the art of Sufi music, playing the guembri and accompanies various sufi bands (taïfas). He learns about the other mystical doctrines (tarîqat) and styles of spiritual North African music like "Jilala, Aïssawa, Gnawa…", "Malhoun too, before they can approach that of my ancestors, Hamadcha music being the most difficult rhythmically "
Ten long years of initiation and mystical musical before mounting its own sufi band in 1986. And finally, the recognition of the father and master. "It was the Essaouira Gnawa Festival. People have helped to bring him on stage where he congratulated me. " Abderrahim Amrani is still living in Fez where he’s the unavoidable interlocutor for everybody who wants to learn traditional music, arts & crafts, or foreign musicians eager to learn those old rhythms. The chief of the Taifa Hamdouchiyya works in the artistic direction of a local musical label, writes and sings the night. Between the two, every Sunday, he receives childrens who learns from him the spiritual songs. And Abderrahim concludes: "The music is present in all of us. This is the place where we live which makes a voice. "

Difficile de le faire se rapporter à sa simple existence. Chaque détour de ses phrases est le prétexte heureux à citer un vers, fredonner un poème ou raconter une anecdote historique. Amrani est un puit d'histoires et d'Histoire. Pas seulement celle de la confrérie soufie des Hamadcha dont il est le leader local. Il fait partie de ces détenteurs d'une mémoire vive et qui se meurt. De ses doigts, il frappe la mesure sur la table, tire sur sa cigarette et regrette toute cette culture que « la seule tradition orale ne suffira pas à faire survivre ». Abderrahim est né à Fès, Derb Mechmacha, le quartier des artistes au c--ur de la vieille ville, avant d'être emmené par son oncle et sa tante en Algérie, à Constantine où il grandit. « Deux grands lieux de culture du Monde arabe », souligne-t-il. « J'habitais Souk El Assar, homa fennia, en face d'un grand maître de la musique arabo-andalouse, Haj Mohamed Taher Fergani, et voilà comment j'ai passé mes 15 premières années bercé par cette musique dont je vis aujourd'hui ». L'oncle est un adepte de Malhoun. C'est sur ses genoux qu'Abderrahim apprend sa première qassida à l'âge de 4 ans, « un morceau écrit par le grand M'barek Soussi ». A l'école primaire, il suit avec assiduité les cours de musique, « obligatoires en Algérie et dont je déplore l'inexistence au Maroc ». En 1978, à la mort de Boumediene, le pouvoir de la junte militaire algérienne se fait de plus en plus menaçant. Est-ce la peur de n'être plus accepté en tant qu'étranger ou la conscience de ne pas être à la place qui est la sienne ? Qu'importe, Abderrahim rejoint sa ville de Fès natale. Il a 16 ans et l'école ne le préoccupe plus. « C'est l'Histoire algérienne que j'avais étudiée, moi ». Il a 16 ans et assiste au côté de son père à sa première « Lilla ». Le destin en est scellé. Musicien tu es et musicien tu seras, au grand dam du patriarche qui voulait pour son unique fils un métier « qui fasse vivre et pas seulement rêver ». Devant un tel refus, Abderrahim doit se faire seul. Il visite les anciens, les conjure de lui apprendre l'art des musiques soufies, gratte le guembri et accompagne les différentes Taïfas. Il s'éduque aux autres Tarîqat, « Jilala, Aïssawa, Gnawa… », au « Malhoun également, avant de pouvoir approcher celle de mes aïeux, Hamadcha étant la plus laborieuse rythmiquement ». Dix longues années d'initiation mystique et musicale avant de monter sa propre Taïfa en 1986. Et enfin la reconnaissance du père et du maître. « C'était à Essaouira, au Festival Gnawa. Les gens l'ont aidé à monter sur scène où il m'a félicité ». Abderrahim Amrani vit toujours à Fès où il est l'incontournable interlocuteur de tout curieux des arts musicaux traditionnels ou des musiciens étrangers désireux d'apprendre ces rythmes séculaires. Le Chef de la Taïfa Hamdouchiyya travaille à la direction artistique d'une maison de production le jour, écrit et chante la nuit. Entre les deux, chaque dimanche, il reçoit des enfants qu'il forme aux chants spirituels et conclut : « la musique est présente en chacun de nous. C'est le lieu où nous vivons qui la fait s'exprimer ».
