Helio Flanders is the lead singer and main songwriter of brazilian folk band Vanguart. The band emerged from the distant and unthinkable rock scene of Cuiaba, Mato Grosso, to go on presenting itself all around Brazil. In a short period of time Vanguart caught the eye of diverse sectors specialized in Rock and Roll media and boosted it's fan base, formed mostly by world wide web users in Brazil. Significant increase in the band's foto-log access numbers and increase of members in the band's online community, are due to the various appearances on Brazil's MTV programing and on other Television appearances, such as Globo's Som Brasil, Altas Horas and Jô Soares. Live performances are crucial for comprehending the power of songs such as "Semaforo", "Cachaca" (nominated by MTV Brazil VMB awards as best independent music video) and "Last Express Blues", among others. In 2009 Helio Flanders played his first solo concert at Sesc Pompeia Theatre, in São Paulo, singing about heartache, loneliness and falling-outs. Taking turns on the piano and the acoustic guitar with an harmonica, Flanders calls attention for his refined and powerful voice performing songs from his band Vanguart and some unreleased tracks and also some versions of old songs, from folk or bossa nova.
