Huayucaltia (pronounced why – you –call – TEE- ah) is the most innovative Latin American-folk-jazz fusion band performing today. The name of the group means kinship and unity, in the ancient language of the Aztecs. This unique ensemble creates an original musical sound by using hundreds of traditional instruments from Latin America, blending haunting and organic sounds with contemporary instruments and musical forms. Their performances are festive renditions of original compositions fusing traditional Latin American song styles with jazz, rock, classical, flamenco and other world-beat genres. Their music is an expression of their dreams, struggles, extensive travels and immense passion, describing the wonders, magic, pain, sadness and resilience of the timeless cultures of the Americas.
Huayucaltia formed in 1985 in Los Angeles, California, where they acquired a loyal audience. The group has toured throughout the West Coast, Southeast and Midwest of the United States, and Perú. The members of the group are: Antonio Ezkauriatza from Monterrey, Mexico; Cindy Harding from Palo Alto, California; Ciro Hurtado, from Lima, Peru; Julio Ledezma from Misiones, Argentina; and Hernan Pinilla from Bogota, Colombia.
Huayucaltia has received a number of awards and recognition for their performance trajectory and innovative musical style. In 2001 and 2002, they were nominated for LA Weekly's Best of Los Angeles Music Awards in the World Music/Recombinant and MVP (Most Valuable Performer) categories. During spring, 2002 the band received a Proclamation from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for their participation in the Summer Nights at the Ford series to sold-out audiences and their contributions to the community over the years. In 1989 Huayucaltia received the NAIRD award for best album of the year for Horizontes.
Huayucaltia has performed at all of the most important performance venues in Southern California. On September 11th, 2003, Huayucaltia performed the "Misa Criolla" by Argentine composer Ariel Ramirez at the Hollywood Bowl to critical acclaim. In 2007 Huayucaltia performed the Misa Criolla with the LA Master Chorale at the Walt Disney Hall to a sold out audience. In December 2004 Huayucaltia performed at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion as part of the Annual Holiday Performance. Huayucaltia performs almost annually at the San Juan Capistrano Regional Library Music Series, where Huayucaltia was the very first musical group to be presented.
