IKKI's Declaration
IKKI, consists of 7 musicians from Austria, Germany, Israel, Japan and Netherlands, aims to recall such spirits as jazz music has forgotten for a long time to create a new form of spontenious soul music, inspired by such great musicians as Carla Bley, Gil Evans, Shibusashirazu Orchestra, Kip Hanrahan and Art Ensemble of Chicago.
IKKI, the name of the band, has double meaning.
In Dutch, it is an abbreviation from Internationaal Kook en Kunst Instituut. Because, in the mind of Matsumoto 'Santi' Kazushi, band leader, composer, arranger and basstrombone player, cooking resembles composing/arranging music and eating together does resemble playing music with the band as both are joyous and cross-cultural moments.
In Japanese, ikki means spiritual unity, demonstration and riot based on equality and autonomy of villagers in medieval-early modern period.
IKKI's extremely dirty, untamed and sentimental powerjazz is not world music, but music with worldness.
