Hallelujah, here it is … the debut platter from The Incredible Strand. Rank it up there alongside the great debuts by The Modern Lovers, The Hoodoo Gurus, Talking Heads and the Violent Femmes. The album, The Name Of This Band Is The Incredible Strand, bristles with energy and drags garage rock kicking and screaming into 2007.
If you’re looking for radio hits try ‘The Girl Who Wants To Be With The Girls’ or ‘The Girl With The Sun In Her Hair’, which surfer Kelly Slater chose to be in his latest film Letting Go. Then there’s last year’s smash, ‘You Broke My Heart At The Big Day Out’, which was three minutes of glorious angst that recalled everything from The Saints to The Sunnyboys.
A four-piece, here’s the back story …
Do you know that waste area near the airport in Brisbane ... Pinkenbar? Let’s assume they live in a small house there. The house looks run down from the outside, but inside it’s something else. Like I said there are four of them Sean, Jeff, Derek and Scott. One day they sound like Talking Heads/Franz Ferdinand ... and the next they sound like The Saints with a bass rig strapped to the engine of a 747.
The band are a classic mix of two guitars, bass and drums. It’s ‘three chords … and the truth’ as The Incredible Strand knock out timeless riffs with clever lyrics and hooks that swim around the cranium for days. Where else will you hear a line like ‘you’re like a complicated math’s equation/I’m never gonna figure it out’?.
The new album was recorded over summer at Brisbane’s Black Box Studios. Jeff and Sean produced while Skritch (Mary Trembles/Beasts Of Bourbon) twiddled the knobs. The good people at Square Eyed Film shot a video for the killer second single, ‘The Girl Who Wants To Be With The Girls’, so The Incredible Strand will be coming to your small screen soon.
The Incredible Strand burst onto the national airwaves last year with their infectious single, ‘You Broke My Heart At The Big Day Out’. A favourite with everyone from Triple J to Nova, the song stormed Triple J’s Net 50 and received acres of rotation on more commercial networks. The Incredible Strand are something unique. Armed and ready to play, The Incredible Strand deliver a fine live set packed with original tunes that will grab you by the tail and shake you around the room.
The Name Of This Band Is The Incredible Strand is out now through Modern Music/Sony BMG.
