This is the gradually expanding biography of Jarvis Humby, from their inception right up to the day before yesterday. Every day we shall unfold a story so spine shakingly groovy, yet so ball bustingly intense that you won’t know your arse from your big toe. So keep a beady eye open on this page, ‘cause if you don’t I’ll find out where you live and soil your front step!
Jarvis Humby started as a two song, two chord, two piece in 1990, the two songs being Love Me Lies by The Prisoners & Oh, Yeah by Bo Diddley. Consisting of Andy on guitar and a chap called Tony on organ/vocals, they did their 1st gig in the dining room of the the latter’s grandmother’s house to a handful of pissed up friends who couldn’t understand why they hadn’t bothered to a) learn the songs and b) how to play their instruments.
In true garage band style they didn’t let lack of talent and musical ineptitude stand in their way and began the hunt for the rest of the band……..
….the next band member was Stodge, a harmonica playing robot who was programmed to play constantly without any sort of idea of how to punctuate songs with his instrument. Then a bass player was found. He played a short scale bass and his favourite musician was Sting (for fucks sake!), but blaggers can’t be choosers.
We then set about putting a set together…………
We covered some classic Bo Diddley (Oh, Yeah) and Sonny Boy Williamson (Help Me) as well as cool track like I'm Rowed Out by The Eyes, Leaving Here by The Birds/Eddie Holland and Bad Part Of Town by The Bare Facts. Threw in some down and dirty originals and we were ready for our first gig! Or so we thought...........
It was at the Green Dragon public house in the small hamlet of Stockton-on-Tees. It was packed full of drunks, tramps, dope heads, layabouts, freaks and head cases. But it wasn't just our mates in there, there was a few locals too.
We kicked of the set with the first song and ended it with the last, and during those 8 (count 'em) songs, we saw that every man, women and child in the place was moving and shaking. At first we thought it was a group of people with bad nerves heading for the door, but no! They were dancing like St. Vitus himself was inside them (steady now). The whole place was bouncing.
After the gig, we were hailed as the best thing since pickled mole (a local delecassy) and we began to get offers of gigs from near and nearer.
Then, as our reputation grew, the offers came from the length and breadth of the U.K.
We had arrived.....
