    Jim Street's Interests
GeneralAfter 23 years of public service, I still start with values. Does a policy value all persons equally? Does it cherish and protect our earth? Does it protect the individuals right to control the fundamentals of his/her private life? I have been motivated foremost by a concern for those who are not at the table:

The children Are they going to get the education they need to live productive and satisfying lives?
The underprivileged Are we going to find our way as a society to achieve racial and social justice for all of us?
Future generations Are we going to leave to our grandchildren clean water and air, green open spaces, and livable neighborhoods? A livable world?

In answering yes to those questions I have built a depth of experience and proven leadership that is unmatched in the 43rd District race or in any legislative race in the State of Washington.

During my 12 years on the Seattle City Council I played a leading role in the development of the Citys recycling program. I initiated and chaired the Seattle City Councils first Committee on Public Education which opened the door to the Citys Families and Education Levy. I initiated Seattles first Children and Youth Action Plan which added millions of dollars to serve at risk children and families. I am the father of the citys nationally acclaimed Neighborhood Matching Fund Program.

I served on Metros Transit Committee where I was a leader in the development of the regions plans for rapid transit. I sponsored the policy that permitted bicycles to be carried on Metro buses. And I initiated the Metro 1% for Arts program.

I served as the first President of the Puget Sound Regional Council, where I led the development of Vision 2020, the regions strategy for protecting our quality of life for future generations.

As a King County Superior Court Judge for four years I gained a broad perspective on how our civil and criminal laws apply to the real world. In juvenile court I had a chance to see what makes young offenders tick and to appreciate their potential to lead productive lives.

For the last five years I have directed the regional juvenile justice reform partnership, Reinvesting in Youth. I raised $2.5 million from local and national foundations to increase the quantity and quality of prevention services for juvenile justice involved youth and their families. Last month Governor Gregoire signed into law the Reinvesting in Youth bill to sustain these gains over time.

Prior to my service on the City Council I was an economist and operations analyst with the World Bank and served four years in the Air Force including a year in Vietnam.

The voters of the 43rd District will be able to count on me to deliver the same qualities of leadership in the legislature on the Environment, on Transportation and Growth Management, on Public Education, and on Race & Social Justice.

The Midterm elections on November 7th, are less than two months away and the DNC is calling all American Democrats to the polls. Now is the chance to take back Congress and all across the country, Democrats are gathering, sharing ideas, and supporting their local Democrat running for office. From Alaska to Florida, from Hawaii to Maine, Democrats are sending a message to Rush Limbaugh that his pain killer addiction problem, that his excuses are running out. A message to Katherine Harris in Florida that we have not forgotten from the 2000 election. A message to Tom Delay that your corruption has been brought to an end. To Sean Hannity and the rightwing network he works for that their smearing and hatred for the DNC will not work this November. To Former Representative Duke Cunningham and Representative Bob Ney that there is a culture of corruption. To Dick Cheney and Halliburton, that we are taking notes of everything you do and have done. To Karl Rove that he needs to find a new job. To Rummy and the question of where are those WMDs? A question to Condi Rice regarding how that Broadway show was while Hurricane Katrina was hitting New Orleans? And finally a question to President Bush. Can the DNC have that banner of 'Mission Accomplished'? We still do not know what we can do with that banner. Either we can take it to Iraq and have our brave troops sign the banner and then hang it in New York City's Time Square. Why? Just to show how much this small banner is the symbol of the biggest mistake an administration has done in American history. And how the Democrats again came back and cleaned up all the mess the previous administration left behind. Controlling the record breaking deficits, bringing an honest government and an honest congress back to the American people and to make sure not another Tom Delay or Duke Cunningham or Bob Ney never come back to Washington. To protect American rights given to us by the constitution and protecting this country from terrorists who want to harm our communities and our children.. That is the promise the DNC has and will keep.

"I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a "thing-oriented" society to a "person-oriented" society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered."

Civic Activism Is Key To Seattle's Vitality
Friday, April 21, 2006, By SUSAN PAYNTER

[snip] In his recent book, "Neighbor Power: Building Community the Seattle Way, " Diers salutes the other Jim I talked to, former Seattle City Council member and former Judge Jim Street, calling Street the true father of Seattle's Department of Neighborhoods. [snip]

[snip] A former Boy Scout, Street invokes the pledge, "Leave your campsite better than you found it." The traditional approach of maximizing growth, then trying to mitigate its impact afterward isn't good enough anymore, he said. "And growth for its own sake isn't value. Vitality is value. If we give it all away for growth now, our children will have the growth but not the vitality, the beauty." [snip]
