Allan Kirby and Jim Yates have a total of over 90 years experience playing music for Ontario audiences. They have opened for Valdy and Fred Eaglesmith and played in various groups at Toronto's Glen Gould Studio, Cobourg Waterfront Festival, the Shelter Valley Folk Festival, the Peterborough Folk Festival, The Fred Eaglesmith Charity Picnic, The Mariposa Folk Festival, Palmer Rapids Bluegrass Festival, River Valley Bluegrass Festival, Orono Bluegrass Festival, Marmora Jamboree and more beer joints and concert halls than you want to hear about. Between them they play guitar, banjo, Dobro, accordion, mandolin, harmonica, concertina, Autoharp, dulcimer and pedal steel guitar.
Jim and Al were also the mandolin and banjo players of McCormick, one of Ontario's leading bluegrass bands. McCormick disbanded after playing their last gig in September of 2006.
Allan and Jim met in 1976 on a radio broadcast where they were each performing with different bands. They thought then that it might be fun to get together and make some music, but it took 25 years before that happened. Finally, in 2001, they began performing as a duo. The result was an eclectic mix of acoustic music, ranging from folk, old-time country, rockabilly and bluegrass, to jazz and swing.
Jim and Al released their first recording, Sittin' In The Kitchen, recorded at Through The Cedars Productions in Cherry Valley, in July, 2005. This recording reveals some of the range of music styles played by Kirby & Yates, two veteran musicians who seek out unique musical material and interpret it their own way.

Thank you for the add. I like your music very much. It's right up my alley. I'm a child of the folk revival in the 60's. Though living far away over here in Denmark. Later I took a break for about 20 years, and was so lucky to run into these young guys playing old time music a couple of years ago, dusted off my instruments, and began to play again. Best thing that have happened for me in years. We'll talk again later I hope. Here or on the Flatpicker Hangout. I have been on the BHO and the FHO for a couple of years.
Untill later Jesper "Toons & tunes" Best thing that have happened for me in years¨

Hope you like it.
The late jug master (1939-2005) plays some of the spookiest tones ever on the previously unreleased "Visiting Day." Recorded by the Jailhouse Jug Band, the tune is currently spotlighted on the Jug Bandolier player.
