Kou Chou Ching - A Hip-Hop band inspired by humanity and social justice.
Founded in 2003, Kou Chou Ching has entered its 6th year. Kou Chou Ching’s work has been included in many compilation albums. After Kou Chou Ching self-published its EP album “FuKe”, Kou Chou Ching finally issued its very first official album “Kou!! It’s Coming Out!!!” with a stunning album cover designed by the three-time Grammy Award nominee Qing-Yang Xiao. This album has received considerable acclaims by its audience & critics. The most prominent indie paper in Taiwan - Pots - raved by claiming “Kou!! It’s Coming Out!!!” “The Most Important Hip-Hop Album of Taiwan.” In 2008, Kou Chou Ching was nominated “Best Band of The Year” and “Best Taiwanese Album of The Year” in the 19th Golden Melody Award. The Taiwan-rich music style gave Kou Chou Ching a unique niche and opportunities to perform throughout Taiwan. They were also invited on a two-week tour in Japan. By mixing the old with the new, Kou Chou Ching has contributed in the revival of Taiwanese traditional culture.
Kou Chou Ching has been mixing traditional Nan-Guan, Taiwanese Recital Chants, Taiwanese opera, Hakka Eight Notes, Taiwanese and aboriginal songs with Hip-Hop, Reggae and other popular music styles, recreating a new genre that is rich in Taiwanese consciousness and culture. They have made their appearances in radios, print and online media in more than 30 countries. Kou Chou Ching has been introduced as “Voice of Taiwan”, “Taiwan’s Big Hip-Hop Hope”, and “Taiwan’s Hip-Hop Ambassadors”. For Kou Chou Ching members, these titles come as a very heart-warming encouragement. It also goes to show that the Taiwanese traditional music can be rid of its serious vibe and be young and vibrant.
Kou Chou Ching’s music varies in three categories: the social-critical and justice related, like “Black Heart” and “Graffiti from Aliens” ; the encouraging and uniting, including “Your Name Is TAIWAN” and “Civil Revolt Part 1” ; and the humanistic and documenting, such as “San Keng Tzu” and “Hou Chui Tao”. Unlike most pop songs where the subject matter is often limited, Kou Chou Ching has been pushing its limit, including specific social issues in its lyrics. The newest tracks that were not included in this album, for example, “Diss-Organized Criminals” expresses critical opinions on scammers while “Gray Coastlines” puts the damaged and polluted coastline in perspective. Taiwanese people needs to know what is happening in Taiwan – that is the goal Kou Chou Ching wants to achieve, to encourage people in thinking critically about their surroundings.
Like a can of fish that has a shelf life, Kou Chou Ching wish these social issues will disappear in time and see the society evolve. Unfortunately some of the issues kept repeating themselves in this society. It is Kou Chou Ching’s wish that citizens of Taiwan work together to make Taiwan a better place.
