Laish are an integral member of the acclaimed Willkommen Collective, a thriving part of Brighton’s alternative folk scene. Centred around the songwriting of Daniel Green, the band has recently expanded into a dynamic new five piece. The band recorded and released their debut album through the Willkommen Records label and in the last 12 months have themselves booked four headlining UK tours.

Influenced by folks like Bill Callahan, Jim O’Rouke and Grizzly Bear and sometimes compared to Herman Dune and James Yorkston, the band are known for playing honest, humble, humourous and uplifting songs. Daniel Green’s distinctive voice is joined by an inventive fingerpicking style, unusual vocal harmonies, violin, rumbling bass, accordion, clarinet and rattling drums. Live shows often include unplugged songs sung amongst the crowd.

Currently the band features Emma Gatrill (vocals, clarinet and accordion), Patrick Lawrence (bass), Martha Rose on fiddle and vocals, The Ben Gregory on electric guitar and vocals and Dan Harding on drums.

Green has been a rather instrumental part of shaping the Willkommen Collective and aside from various band and production duties, he has most put together the Willkommen Foxswap, a free compilation of covers among the collective.

Last year Laish were chosen to support Grizzly Bear and Beach House at The Roundhouse. They have also played various festivals including The Big Chill, Brighton Festival and Willkommen Foxtrot; and toured Europe three times as support to Sons of Noel and Adrian. A headlining tour of Europe is in the pipeline for January 2012.

The band’s members have played with the likes of Laura Marling, Alessi’s Ark and The Leisure Society.

Laish released their debut album on Willkommen Records in the Winter of 2010 and so far have had nothing but glowing reviews. 5th December 2011 sees the free download release of live favourite, She is Clever.
