Laish is an old word meaning Dan. Laish is also the given name for Daniel Green and company’s musical outlet. Green is generally making himself useful amongst the Willkommen Collective, Brighton and London's alternative folk scene. He plays drums and sings with the progressive folk behemoth, Sons of Noel and Adrian, as well as occasionally lending his talents to Laura Marling, Alessi's Ark, The Leisure Society, The Climbers, Shoreline, OCDC, Curly Hair, Redwood Red, Rowan Coupland and Kopek.
When he's not being useful, he's writing and recording lyrically humble and deadpan songs that have an inventive fingerpicking style, a distinctive and honest vocal delivery and violins, melodica, bass and drums. Laish Quartet is the band that has sprung forth. Featuring Ben Gregory and Mike Miles from Curly Hair on rhythm section, violin by folk singer Jo Burke and vocals by Cathy Cardin from Sons of Noel and Adrian and Redwood Red.
An album has been completed with 10 songs and we are looking forward very much to releasing it on Willkommen Records later on in 2010.

We have so far shared stages with Mumford and Sons, Sixtoes, Castanets, Jonquil, David Thomas Broughton, The Leisure Society, The Mariner's Children, Sons of Noel and Adrian, Held by Hands, Revere, Mary Hampton, Revenge of Shinobi, Richard Dawson, Rowan Coupland and worked with these promoters and festivals: Brighton Festival, Union Chapel, Big Chill Festival, Firegathering Festival, Small World Festival, Willkommen, Woodland Recordings, Type PR, Toy Soldier, Lack of Communications, NFR, Littlest Birds, Broken Toy Music, Bleeding Hearts Club, O.I.B. Records, Little Nomadic, Thumbdog Promotions, Victory Inn and Brighton Stripped.
Here endeth the blurb. We hope you enjoy the songs and suggest you go for a brisk walk outside, do a bit of stretching.
We're very much looking forward to it as well - glad you agreed to play, it'll be lovely to have you.
Just glanced at your available tour dates - you should contact our manager Lauren via lauren@jigsawhouse.co.uk, she can probably sort you with a Norwich date.
The first Willkommen Records event at Coachwerks in Brighton. Located just off Lewes Road, on Hollingdean Terrace, this is a beautifully converted industrial space and now an inspiring and spacious venue (plus they have a very cheap bar!)
Noiserv is the name given for Portugeuse musical mastermind, David Santos. Compared to Juana Molina, David Thomas Broughton and Jose Gonzalez, he creates a hypnotising and emotionally engaging atmosphere, looping the sounds of the room, xylophone, guitar, melodica, harmonica and keyboards.
Woodpecker Wooliams is a charming one woman experimentalist. With an extraordinary bag of tricks, employing vocals, kora, celtic harp, clarinet, harmonium, glockenspiels and whistles, she conjures bewitching freeform lo-fi chants and sings folk songs of mystery and secrecy.
Redwood Red is Cathy Cardin. She is the feminine touch to Willkommen favourites Sons of Noel and Adrian and Laish Quartet. With her grounded and pure vocal delivery, she interweaves a unique fingerpicking guitar style with double bass and flute. This is a rare live outing for Redwood Red and one not to be missed.

"Beautifully pastoral debut." MOJO **** "Wonderful" Observer Music Monthly **** "An autumnal mist of British Bank Holiday ennui surrounds Nick Hemming's literate meditations." The Times **** "Music to cuddle up to, music to clutch yourself to, music that is, as Jimmy Webb might say, necessary. This is a band that could well be the sound of 2009." So THIS SATURDAY (Sept 12th) OIB Records will host a VERY special show at Audio in Brighton with three of our favourite alt-folk acts VETIVER (Bella Union) + TINY VIPES (Sub Pop) + ROWAN COUPLAND (Willkommen Records). There's been a lot of interest in this show but there's still some tickets available from the links below, we've also put a select number aside for sale on the night.
Whalebone Polly is a duo made up of Kate Staples of This is the Kit and Rachael Dadd of The Hand and their music has much in common with those groups - rippling banjos, warm harmonies and odd percussive interludes.
Rozi Plain has played with Francois and the Atlas Mountains and has had records released by the Fence Collective. Her songs are sumptuous and charming.
Rowan Coupland amassed a mini-choir for his last Willkommen show at the Sanctuary - who knows what he’s got in store for us next?
