One part machine precision and one part nervous breakdown, LAST YEAR'S MODEL is the soundtrack to a video game influenced equally by New Order and Iron Maiden but filtered through the 'technicolor pogo-punk' of Polysics. Abandoning the traditional idea of rhythm guitars, the band combines 8-bit rhythm synths, hook-filled lead guitar lines, moroder keyboard bass and a combination of live punk drums and synthetic blips and claps to achieve their spastic pop sound.
The band's lyrical style rallies together disparate musical influences. Words about hostile computer takeovers, over-stimulation, extreme disinterest and a future so sterile it would make Devo proud are delivered in a yelp that is part Dale Bozzio and part Howlin' Pelle.
With a live show that matches its futurist aesthetic, Last Year's Model performs with a manic energy constantly poised on the brink of explosion. Combining dark wave angst with Gary Numan-esque detachment, their performances seem as though they were conceived by William Gibson, but directed by John Waters: a superfuture too day-glo to ignore.
