Pissed off Punk Pisses off Granny
Levity’s latest signing, disco punk two-piece WOW, proved too much for the Hotel Hollywood last night when they shut the band down mid-set during their Levity Nights appearance.
Doris Goddard, veteran licensee of the iconic Hotel Hollywood, bewildered by WOW’s unabashed and blaring party-disco fun, took hold of the mic during the band’s third song and ordered them to stop playing immediately.
Surprised and confused WOW politely asked Doris for permission to play just one more song, to which a relenting Doris agreed, before completely shutting the show down.
Goddard who has owned the Hotel Hollywood since 1977, is a live music supporter (and herself a performer) playing host to up to four gigs a week. In order to maintain her live music licence and friendly relations with neighbours, Goddard must adhere to strict sound levels.
WOW notched the shutdown up to experience, and in the end kissed and made up with Doris promising to hand deliver her a copy of their debut EP when it is released on Levity this August.
Levity Nights continues at the Hotel Hollywood every Thursday night.

Who is John Steel? John Steel is a horse. A tiny, plastic, kid’s toy horse. John Steel was stolen from a small child when multi-instrumentalist and singer, Tim Morrissey, was working at a non-descript restaurant in Brisbane. Well, stolen is a bit harsh, but the kid left it there and let’s just say it was never returned. That’s because John Steel had found his new vocation – as the mascot of the blooming band, The John Steel Singers.
It was at this same restaurant that Tim met the musical talent of Scott Bromiley, who taught him guitar. Together they formed the band that would have a horse as its mascot. They were later joined on the waiting staff by horn-player Pete Bernoth, and later recruited guitarist and vocalist Luke McDonald, bassist Pat McDermott and drummer Ross Chandler to the band.
The Brisjanglian’s catchy blend of pop has seen them become firm triple j favourites as well as tour with the likes of the Polyphonic Spree, The Panics and many more. t’s that pop ethos that is firmly at the centre of the indie rock band.
The John Steel Singers: In Colour EP will be released on November 1st through Levity®/Inertia.
Featuring four tracks laid down in Sydney with Scott Horscroft (The Panics, The Presets, Wolfmother), the EP takes on an experimental vibe for The John Steel Singers, pushing up the fuzz and rock, whilst still maintaining the pop they are now well known for.
Since forming in late 2007, disco punk two-piece WOW have wowed folks the world over with their unique brand of hip-shaking, in-your-face, electro pop. In just a few short months, the band has made an appearance at Field Day, headlined the Hanoi International Music Festival in Vietnam, supported Crystal Castles, and released a vinyl 7” through Hong Kong based label Metal Postcard. The limited edition white vinyl record featured the killer single “Common Species”, which has now sold out in the UK and Australia, sent bloggers into a frenzy with WOW becoming an instant online favourite.
The brainchild of duo Matt Cribb and Bree Carter, WOW’s sound comes from an apparent lack of musical ability, an incredible ‘sixth sense’ pop sensibility combined with too much time locked in a room under strobe lights messing around with drum machines and cheap keyboards.
The end result shows signs of LCD Sound System, Crystal Castles and Gang of Four and has been described as the musical equivalent of a Commodore 64 adapted into a laser gun designed to fire at random – that you can dance to! Or as Drum Media would have it, WOW is the non-musician's musician / explorer in the garage having the recording party of a life- time. Feb 2008
Since joining the Levity® stable in June WOW have recorded their debut EP with producer Scott Horscroft (Presets, Silverchair, The Panics) promising even bigger things for the remainder of 2008. Keep an eye on the WOW myspace myspace.com/wowsydney and be first to hear the new tracks.
“We’re starting to expect some brilliant things from this duo” Big Stereo “A buzzing slice of garage-rough electro…straight out of DFA/LCD Soundsystem territory. It’ll be interesting to see what WOW do next” 3D World
MERCY ARMS have been impressing audiences with their magnetic stage presence and abundant talent since their formation in Sydney three years ago. So impressive that the band were hand picked by the likes of The Strokes, The Pixies, Cut Copy and The Editors to open their Australian shows, and Dave Sitek from TV On The Radio also chose to work with the band in the studio.
Of course, in this world CVs won't get you anywhere unless you have the songs to back them up, and Kept Low, the debut release from Mercy Arms, did exactly that. The five-track EP (and second release from Levity®) is an impressive package, with vocalist and guitarist Thom’s beautiful vocals and intelligent lyrics set against the mesmerising bed of sound created by guitarist Kirin J Calinan and rhythm section Ash Moss and Jules Sudek. It's moody, mysterious and utterly compelling.
The Kept Low EP was released to much acclaim, with TripleJ and community stations adding the tracks to high rotation and critics swooning all over Australia. The boys are currently in the studio with legendary producer Tony Cohen (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, the Go-Betweens).
Cut Off Your Hands, New Zealand wunderkinds and lovely guys to boot, have had a massive 18 months. In mid-2007, the four-piece released their first EP, Blue on Blue, through Levity® (marking the first release on the brand new label).
Still Fond, the lead single the EP, was a veritable radio hit, with the Smiths-meets-The Buzzcocks jangle hitting high-rotation on TripleJ and community radio. Recorded overseas and produced by uberproducer Bernard Butler (of Suede fame), the EP also included the Fifties flavoured tongue-in-cheek pop of Oh Girl, the dry fuzzed-up Sonic Youth crunch of Closed Eyes, plus the kooky title track, the best song Split Enz never wrote.
Following the success of the EP, Cut Off Your Hands scored an international record deal with prestigious UK indie 679 and relocated to London, where they are currently recording their debut LP with Butler.
