Lies Beijerinck (didgeridoo): ‘Didge mother of Holland’ is playing didge since 1993. Busking on the streets she developed her own style and soon was discovered by the Amsterdam dance scene. She has been playing at numberous parties and festivals ever since.
Nowadays she is known for her strong and articulated style throughout Europe. Her sound matches perfectly with Michiel’s style of playing.
Michiel Teijgeler (didgeridoo): ‘MT-Yidaki’ started playing didge in 1993. He has developed a unique, personal sound that is best described as Etno-techno. He loves to blend the sound of the didgeridoo with a diverse range of musical styles. As a co-founder of 3ple-D he is always searching for new melodies and strong beats. For this album he, together with Lies, was inspired by rythms from all over the world and made combinations where the two didgeridoos compliment each other.
Terence Samson (percussion): ‘Groove Master Ter’ plays instruments and music that has world music influences. The combination of different styles of world and modern music, like dance music, is something he is experementing with for more than ten years.
As the newest member of 3ple-D Terence blends the sound of the daf, pandero, conga’s, tabla and all sorts of small percussion with didgeridoo like no other.

Often I am told I am not allowed to play didgeridoo because I am female, so for me this issue is very interesting. In 2000 I was at Garma festival in Arnhemland to join in a yidaki (didgeridoo) master class, from Djalu Gurruwiwi (a custodian of the instrument) and M*lka* M*n*ng*rr (who sadly passed away last year). Two amazing yidaki players. Also I was taught by D*v*d Bl*n*s*, an amazing player from western Arnehemland.

In our consultations, we have received varied opinions regarding women & didjeridoo playing.
Indeed, Djalu' Gurruwiwi, tribal elder from north-east Arnhem Land and one of the primary custodians of the instrument, supports us in our business and gives us his blessings to play the instrument. You may wish to read comments on Djalu's web site where he expressly states his approval of non-indigenous women playing the instrument,

In addition, many Aboriginal players of the didjeridoo from the local Sydney area are our friends and customers.
1) D*v*d Bl*n*s*, Wuglar Elder.
“I was at a workshop in Melbourne….among the wide variety of people were several women…so the inevitable was asked. The reply by David Blanasi [a Wugularr Northern Territory elder and didjeridoo craftsman] was basically that the taboo really applied to ceremonial use…and interpreted appropriately would equally apply to any of us non-initiated-non-originals (or whatever it is that we should call ourselves).
However, for the uses we derive, which Blanasi referred to as fun music, no such restrictions apply. This sounds to me to be eminently reasonable way to deal with this issue.” (Martin O’Loughlin) from the book,

2) Article written by ‘Murray Garde’. Cultural research officer at Maningrida Arts and Culture and Aboriginal Art and Craft Cooperative based in Maningrida, Central – North Arnhem Land.
“Beliefs have developed about the didjeridoo which are not found among its original owners”.
These ideas emphasise the Didjeridoo’s sacred status and have endowed it with a mystic spirituality never held by its traditional cultures.
An example involves the well-known gender debate about whether women are ‘allowed’ to play the didjeridoo. While women in the Maningrida region do not play the didjeridoo this is not because of some strict taboo but simply because didjeridoo playing is not viewed as a usual female activity. In parts of the Gulf of Capentaria, such as near Borroloola, and in some places in the Kimberley region of Top End Western Australia, Aboriginal women do in fact play didjeridoo in traditional music and some have been quite famous for it.
Despite this, some Aboriginal people in southern parts of Australia now hold to a taboo on women playing the didjeridoo for more recently developed spiritual reasons [Barwick 1997:95].
Aboriginal people in Arnhem Land do not share such a view of the didjeridoo as a highly sacred and spiritual object – the sounds of which, in New Age mythologies, are even claimed to heal the sick”.

Further facts also from the book ‘The Didjeridoo from Arnhem Land to Internet’ are as follows:
“For the Kimberleys area, a woman didjeridoo player is featured on the recording
‘Singing Up the Country ‘(1992) where on track 26, recorded in 1992, Polly Widalji plays a didjeridoo solo (Grandam Amboorny Wirnan, 1992). In 1996, a Miriwoong woman resident near Kununnarra in the east Kimberley, Annie Wilson, told me that she plays didjeridoo for her own amusement, although she would not play for ceremonies or in public.
Sandy Dann, a journalist and broadcaster resident in Broome in the west Kimberleys, occasionally plays didjeridoo in schools and in private jam sessions and reports that elders in the Broome area have been happy for her to do so (cited in personal communication from
Karl Neuenfeldt. 1996).
Because of adverse reactions by Aboriginal men from other places, reactions that have become especially evident in the last few years, she feels that as an Aboriginal woman it is now appropriate for her to play in public or for money and to teach the instrument.
3) M*LK*Y M*N*NG*RR : An outstanding player and maker of Didjeridoo is Milkay Munungurr. Playing didj since the age of 6 Milkay has spent his whole life absorbed by the instrument that has now become his namesake. Passed down the family line the didj has now become the focal point of this mans creativity.
From Arnhem Land, Milkay is notably one of the most successful aboriginal musicians in the world, playing in the famous band Yothu Yindi. In 2005, Didj Beat Didjeridoos in association with Milkay Munungurr conducted a workshop on traditional yidaki playing techniques and the question was asked of Milkay “What is your opinion on women and didjeridoo?” Response by Milkay: “The restriction only applies to ceremonial practice and aboriginal law”. “No such restriction applies outside of the context of aboriginal ceremony”. In other words, it is perfectly acceptable for non indigenous women to play the instrument outside of ceremony.
We understand that there might be a diversity of views on this matter in the Indigenous community. We appreciate that there is no singular opinion, and furthermore, we are also aware of the use of the didjeridoo by women in traditional Aboriginal society,

Pg.17: “The second sample of didjeridoo playing is by a woman, Jemima Wimalu, who belongs to the Mara group at Roper River. Not only is Jemima able to perform A-type accompaniments but, as she demonstrates here, she is also practiced in playing didjeridoo accompaniments of the B-type….”)

Playing for fun is a simple physical activity not a dangerous spiritual one”.

Peter Dunbar-Hall: “A widespread but erroneous urban myth holds that in Northern Australian societies, women are forbidden to touch or play the instrument, but the situation is merely a conventional matter: in public ceremonies, men usually play musical instruments, while women slap their skin or clap”. Influences
Terence has a background of South-American and Indian music, with his tablas conga's and cajon.
Michiel and Lies are more African orientated, many of their rhythms are inspired by Dumba parts.
But also Arabian music has influenced these three.

So this year for the 3rd time we will go to Klawer, South Africa. To work with children with learning difficulties, and through playing music, singing and dancing show them possibilities they have, better social skills and more responsibility. Last years we did special education through music. This year we'll prepare a show, which the children will perform at the biggest party of the year in the region!
This year we will also start the rebuilding the churchbuilding to a theatre, with the help of motivated boys who have learning difficulties. Also we'll try to give our kitchen an extra boost and hope to get more supermarkets to be buyers of our products. Here girls with learning difficulties can learn to be of importance to their community.
The 4th of October will be our 3rd benefit concert this time at the Badcuyp in Amsterdam.
With Marancha (brasil samba band) and 3ple-D (didgeridoo band). It will be a nice afternoon with a possitive vibe and great world music! So please come at 2 pm and join us till 5 pm.
With the ticket sale and donations we can really help these children of which most parents are alcoholics and don't take care of them.

First dutch professional didgeridoo band
3ple-D was founded by Michiel Teijegeler and Lies Beijerinck in 1995, after they found each other busking on the streets in Amsterdam. Both play the didgeridoo since 1993 and are regarded as some of the finest didge players in Europe.
The sound of Michiel and Lies is straightforward, solid, pure didge music.
3ple-D released their debut album “High from the Lowlands” in 2003. According to the “Didgeridoo & Co Magazine” it was “quite a treat”. High from the Lowlands is currently sold out.
Percussion player Terence Samson joined 3ple-D in 2004 and pushed the band to a whole new level.
(The didgeridoo playing of Michiel and Lies cannot be described as “traditional”, but 3ple-D tries to respect the traditional owners of the Yidaki in Arnehmland, Australia.)
Their new album “Zumo” is out now!

Um 21 Uhr gibt es eine Pause und wir stehen, noch ganz in den Geschichten Dürrs versunken, auf und gehen nach draussen zum Markt. Eine halbe Stunde später stehen wir wieder im Saal, denn nun spielen 3ple-D aus Holland. Was wir hier geboten bekommen, ist wirklich beeindruckend. Lies Beÿerinck beweist ihr Können auch noch in einem Solo. Ihre erstaunenswerte Performance stösst beim Publikum auf pure Bewunderung. Das Faszinierende, wenn man diese Frau auf der Bühne sieht, ist, dass man sofort das Gefühl hat, sie lebt in dieser Musik; man sieht richtig, wie die Klänge des Didges durch ihren Körper fliessen.
Hinter ihrem Können, das sie sich während 13 Jahren angeeignet hat, steckt natürlich auch eine Menge Talent. Die Band, wie Lies uns später in einem Interview preisgibt, besteht seit vier Jahren. Nach dem Swizzeridoo werden sie noch viele Orte in ganz Europa besuchen, unter anderem in Portugal, Frankreich, England, Italien und Deutschland.

Superb....wonderful....excellent....very entertaining, etc, etc, etc.!!!...didge music with a modern difference, without detracting or insulting this very ancient form of Old World Music.
It gave me great pleasure to be at the 'Didgin Devon', didgeridoo festival. This event is held over 3 days and is a truly international scene, with lots of remarkably brilliant didge players that can be found or heard anywhere around.
The highlight of this festival for me happened on the Saturday night (6th Aug), as i was sat in the audience listening to all the lovely didge acts that were going on, and upon when it was to be the turn of 3ple-D from the Netherlands to take the stage, and what a stage performance it was...!!!, Wow...!!!. absolutely fantastically brilliant,...didge playing with a modern difference...so vibrant, alive and lots of energy with great rhythm, made one wanting to dance to the wonderful sounds which 3ple-D were producing.
The combination components of 3ple-D, consisting of Michiel Teijgeler, Lies Beijerinck & Terence Samson, complimenting each other beautifully, and was very impressed with the female of the group; Lies, she can play as good as any male, and why not?...more women should take up & learn the didge...total admiration & respect to Lies.
3ple-D's awe inspiring performance was totally professional in every way and very selfishly i did not want them to stop. They made my evening/festival that i hope they will return in 2006 as i will be there as a No.1 English fan.

Didge Days
Now after Denra Durr and Ganga Giri we come to my personal favourites of this year Didge Days (festival in Stuttgart Germany): 3ple-D.
Barefoot vibing and grooving Lies and Michiel play one hot beat after an other perfectly in tune with each other, like it was pure joy.
The "toot' beats are all over the place and in between the pieces there's uplifting conversation.
In short: Sound and Sympathy-factor 1000!
Incredible didging! So nice to discover another female didge player...I'm still fairly new but playing hard at it:) I really love your style - and the info. re: female didge players from the indigineous people of Australia.
