  • Bio

Little Hooks have not departed, au contraire, they have been making tracks, but of the music kind. With the release of their new EP the marauding minstrels, Marty McGill and Ruairi O’Doherty, are set to reclaim their rightful rank with the rest and the best of the exponents of Northern Irish music. With a clutch of intimate gigs lined up in the coming months and the EP set for launch next Monday, the wares of many months in rehearsal and the studio will be aired, with a sound which is a bit of a departure from what Hooks fans are accustomed to. The honeyed and husky harmonies, hooks and honest lyrics still remain, but there is a variance and breadth to the carefully crafted songs. On listening, it seems the Hooks are no longer ‘little,’ but have created a pretty ‘major’ sound. The duo has eked out a recording of spectral Americana and alternative folk with this 4-track EP, which is embellished with burnished hook-laden guitars and timeless singer-songwriter soulfulness on the potent tracks. Jaunty opening track, ‘Little Birds,’ is an up-beat radio-friendly ditty with the requisite down-at-heel vibe hidden under its shiny surface. The hefty layered harmonies, drums and guitars on ‘Good Reason’ make this track probably the biggest sonic assault Little Hooks have unleashed, while the haunted chant ‘Scars for You’ tells a profoundly brooding love story over a drift of guitar strings. One half of Little Hooks, Marty McGill, said the band is looking forward to playing the new repertoire at their forthcoming gigs: “We have taken our time, and have strived to create a more expansive acoustic sound for the Hooks while obviously remaining firmly grounded in melancholy and harmony. It will be interesting to put them in the public domain after playing between the two of us for so long.” It sounds like Little Hooks are as they were but bigger, acoustic but electric too, simple but musically intricate, continuing the anomaly that they always have been; inspired but tricky to tag.
