Biography:
"All real and mostly true." This is how Luke Austin Daugherty describes his songs of love, faith, war, human nature and just plain tellin' stories. "I feel that my lot in this big music machine is to be a real artist singing real songs that matter. If I never hit it big (whatever that means), I just want to make some difference to the people I'm in front of. I've made a lot of sacrifices to do this and I don't plan to give up any time soon."
Not only a singer/songwriter, but a poet and painter, Luke Austin Daugherty pours the stuff of life into whatever vessel he is comfortable with.
"There's something about being captured by a thought, feeling or moment when you can't hardly breathe until you've taken it captive in return. It's usually unexpected and happens in the strangest places. But if you don't respond, you've done humanity at least a small disservice. Everyone should have the opportunity to share in it. As for me, I try to put the cookies on the bottom shelf as much as possible and try not to make art, in whatever form, something for 'the elite'."
As an indie artist, Luke keeps a busy performing schedule along with being a crew leader for a international relocation company. "Hey, I just feel like a lot of the old blues-men of the last century. They would labor in the fields and then they would go burn down the juke joints at night or lift the rafters at church, because they couldn't not do it. It was in them. They stewed down the hardships and victories of life into songs and gave them to their small world. Music done that way comes from a more pure place in the heart. One that the industry's greed hasn't corrupted yet. I guess the only difference between them and me is I carry furniture and move folks for part of my living. I've had a lot of songs come from my travels, seeing the country, the people, missing my wife and kids and being so worn down I would have cried if no one was looking. I sometimes say it builds character in a joking way, but a lot of truth is spoken in jest."
Luke is an artist who deeply loves performing and puts his heart into sharing his music. As one who believes in collaboration and improvisation, he likes to keep things interesting for his audience. Playing acoustic and electric guitars, with harmonica and live loops, it makes for a great show.
As a 2005 Pulitzer nominated poet, Momentum award winner and other songwriting award winner, he has release 6 indie label CDs and published 3 books of poetry. He has played from Indianapolis to Nashville, TN and back again. He's been from the coffee house to Conseco Fieldhouse and played from venues that featured other indie's to Bruce Springsteen. He has come a long way, but there is still work to do. And he has more in his heart that has to get out.
