Sounds Like
Trying to make sense of the bad days; cynacism and despair colliding with hope and beauty.
"I love the sound, a sort of deep 80's synth sound, just the sort of thing I like!" Stuart Morrison, Insomnia Radio.
"...loved the stuff reminded me a little of a melodic Sisters of mercy crossed with the Editors and OMD and a little coldplay maybe... ...definitely an alternative 80's thing going on and very melodic but with a sound of it's own also a good mix, open smile is well epic, nice, which is really happening at the moment. Love the guitars and use of synths and the tunes are infectious and catchy after a few plays they stick in your head." Dale Olivier, Director/Head of Music, Matchbox Recordings.
"I love that track... the way it builds up in to something really heavy at the end...it's one of those tracks that just really grows on you." Alan Carr (Head of Darkhorse Radio) on 'Not Enough'.
“For us it’s born out of a lifelong obsession with music – of all types – ranging from dance to rock. We’ve both always talked about making something that pulls elements of all the bands we’ve loved into something that’s totally ours. Now with the M1 Connect we’re starting to achieve that.”
M1 Connect are a two-piece rock/electronica act comprised of brothers Martin and Stewart Cuthew. Both together and separately, they have been involved in numerous bands and projects over the years and have drawn from this combined experience and a lifelong obsession with music to mould elements of the sounds they love into something totally theirs. Both started out as guitarists, but have since widened their range of skills to include keyboards, programming and production in order to pursue their craft.
After an initial few online demos, the brothers made a conscious decision to not use live drums, instead using electronic beats and samples alongside synths and guitars to define their sound. This made it easier for them to fuse their love for dance music with their love for rock and led to M1 Connect, as it is now, being born to the world at the end of 2008.
“We want to create something that moves you emotionally as well as physically and comment on the things that affect ourselves and others every day. For us it’s about the human condition and making sense of the modern world and its problems and complications, but not losing sight of what beauty there is in the simple little things – and ultimately remaining hopeful.”
The resulting sound is uplifting with dark undertones – warm pad synths and melodic guitars reach out and enchant you whilst your body is hit with a barrage of driving synth bass and pulsating electronic grooves. Riding above all this are vocals that speak of cautionary tales and the woes of modern life whilst maintaining a pop/rock melodic sensibilty and a sense of optimism. Think Smashing Pumpkins meets Doves, produced and remixed by Orbital!
Most recently, ‘Not Enough’ has received airplay on GU2 Radio, Insomnia Radio and was featured on Bragster.com’s ‘Best of’ programme. ‘Songs of Sympathy’ has also recently received airplay on GU2 Radio and reached the Semi-Finals of the prestigious 2009 UK Song Writing Contest. With further online radio stations lining up to play their material, a growing fanbase and an ever-improving live show, the future is looking good for M1 Connect.
Simple but epic; personal yet anthemic, this is music for the sad but hopeful; for those who feel down-trodden and doubtful but have a burning desire to fight for their place in the world, wherever that may be

Hey guys, nice meeting you tonight! I like your sound, my headphones are burning away nicely through overuse.... there's a bit of Doves in there, some Joy Division, ace rock drive and "real" songs (as previously discussed)...
I suggest you check out tenek as they have a similar set-up to you... and All Systems Fail, you'll find them on our top friends...
Looking forward to hooking up with you soon for some synth-rock-Nottingham style...
Very strong sense of melody. A likeable voice that knows how to soar. Lyrics clear as a bell sending home a message. Pleasing musical textures seldom straying into twee territory.
Thanks for the add accept.
